Battle[edit]
The combat system of Episode I is turn-based. Similarly to Xenogears, standard attacks are executed in combinations of up to three button presses, also having Tech Attacks as an equivalent to Deathblows. Characters also have Ether skills. Both Ethers and Techs can be upgraded with skill points. In combat, characters can also use Boost to push themselves to the front of the turn order, allowing themselves to act immediately. In addition, characters can also summon mechs in battle known as A.G.W.S..
Field[edit]
The gameplay of Episode I is of the more linear in the series. There are very few side quests and NPCs to talk to. Some of the things to do outside the main story include finding Segment Addresses hidden all over the world and helping the Professor and his assistant Scott to complete Erde Kaiser. In the field, characters can use the Vaporizer to destroy objects which may contain items or enemies.
Minigames[edit]
A.G.W.S. Battle[edit]

Players control A.G.W.S units who fight each other, much alike the Battling Arena minigame from Xenogears. This minigame can be played solo versus the CPU, or against another human opponent in multiplayer.

Music[edit]
- Main article: Music of Xenosaga Episode I
The music of this game comprises a combination of live orchestral recordings and sampled music. Much of it is cutscene music; only a very small number of tracks are used in combat or as area themes. All music was composed by Yasunori Mitsuda. The music was made into an original soundtrack, the Xenosaga Original Soundtrack, later rereleased as an album titled Xenosaga Episode I.
Other releases[edit]
- Main article: Xenosaga Episode I Reloaded
The game received a Japan-exclusive rerelease called Xenosaga I Reloaded with some extra features.
Regional differences[edit]
- The scene where Albedo menaces MOMO with a knife and decapitating himself with it is altered, removing the knife and leaving Albedo to rip off his head with his bare hands. However the sound effects that accompany these are not removed.
- It is cited by many that they preferred the altered version of the scene over the original.
- Albedo putting his hand inside MOMO's body is changed to lifting his hand over her head.
Trivia[edit]
- The subtitle, Der Wille zur Macht, is German and can be translated into The Will to Power. Like the other games, it was named after the work of Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche.
- In early trailers, there's footage of Fifth Jerusalem and Jr. battling the Gargoyle that did not make it in the final product. [3]
