The World Tree is an area in Xenoblade Chronicles 2. It is a massive tree at the center of Alrest, atop which is said to lie Elysium, the land of paradise. It is a central element to the stories of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna ~ The Golden Country and serves as the penultimate region of the former.
Story[edit]
The World Tree lies in the center of Alrest. According to legend, humanity lived on top of it with their divine father, the Architect, but were suddenly cast out and were forced to live on Alrest. Reaching the World Tree and finding Elysium is the party's primary goal throughout the game. The party attempted to enter the World Tree, via Umon's boat, but was stopped by the Great Void and Ophion before being swallowed by the Urayan Titan. After Mythra awakens, Pyra reveals that a man climbed the World Tree in hoping of finding Elysium, but found it empty, and as proof he reached the top, he brought back two Core Crystals: Mythra's and Malos's.
It was later revealed that after the Aegis War, Indol forbade access to the World Tree and enlisted Ophion to guard it from intruders; to this end it also carved the Great Void in the Cloud Sea. Thus, the only way to enter the World Tree is to rescind Ophion's order, via the Omega Fetter. After Torna kidnaps Pyra, they take her to the Cliffs of Morytha, a shortcut to the World Tree. The party manages to catch up to them and successfully rescues her, but they plunge into the Land of Morytha.
The party then enters the World Tree, via the roots. It turns out the World Tree is an ancient orbital elevator, overrun with machinery left behind by the civilization of Morytha. As the party climbs up the World Tree in a race against Torna, Indol and Amalthus make their move by attacking the World Tree. Through Haze's Core Crystal, Amalthus uses the Titans as weapons to assault the World Tree, but Rex and Pneuma free them by destroying Indol's amplification towers. Mikhail, piloting the Marsanes, then sacrifices himself to sink Indol and give the party time to confront Jin one last time.
In the Upper Level, after the party bests Jin in battle, a horribly mutated Amalthus attacks and kills both Patroka and Akhos, but is defeated and killed by Jin, who perishes as well after using the last of his power. The party finally reaches the top of the World Tree, but finds Elysium a desolate wasteland. There, the party finally meets the Architect who reveals the true natures of Alrest, as well as the Aegises and the source of their power, the Conduit. After this revelation, the party then confronts Malos and Aion and defeats them. The Conduit then disappears, causing the World Tree to collapse, threatening to destroy all of Alrest. Pneuma stays behind to use the last of Aion's power to destroy the World Tree and save Alrest.

Trivia[edit]
- All four levels of the World Tree visited in-game, Benetnash, Mizar, Alioth, and Megrez, are named after stars from the Great Bear constellation. Furthermore, the floors are ordered in the same way as the stars in the Big Dipper asterism, starting from the 'handle'.
