Underground Ruins is an area in Xenosaga Episode III - Also Sprach Zarathustra. It is the final area visited in the game. Approaching Zarathustra is the point of no return and the party will battle the said entity.

Description[edit]

The Underground Ruins are a large crystalline cave system underneath the planet Michtam. The outer area is purple and consists of a crystalline puzzle, while the inner depths is blue and large crystal objects float throughout. In the central chamber lies Zarathustra, a device that starts the Eternal Recurrence. The crystals are made out of the same material as Shion's pendant.

Story[edit]

The party reaches the Underground Ruins via a portal that connects the cave system underneath the Isolated Research Facility. In the first room, after Shion learns about her identity as the reincarnation of the Maiden of Mary and awakens Mary Magdalene within KOS-MOS, T-elos ambush the party but is defeated and absorbed by KOS-MOS. As the party reaches the entrance to the central chamber, Kevin Winnicot intercepts the party and manages to use Shion's insecurities to get her to side with him, but with the help of KOS-MOS and Allen, Shion manages to break free and returns to the party and defeats Kevin. The party finally reaches Zarathustra and Wilhelm within the inner depths.

After Shion and the party rejects the Eternal Recurrence and destroys Zarathustra, chaos and Nephilim starts the process of sending Michtam to Lost Jerusalem in an effort to buy time before the universe's destruction. KOS-MOS and Jin Uzuki voluntarily stays behind to keep the two safe from the approaching Gnosis, which resulted in Jin's death and KOS-MOS's sacrifice. But their actions gave them the time they needed to perform the task.
