Tora (トラ) is a playable character in Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Tora is unable to become a real Driver, so as a workaround he built Poppi, an artificial Blade.
Appearance and personality[edit]
Tora is an oddly-large-for-his-age orange Nopon with tiger-like brown stripes across his body. He wears a pair of blue overalls over a white shirt, a purple bandolier with several pouches, and a pair of gold-rimmed goggles on his head. Tora's age is ambiguous, but it is clear from his behavior that he is an older child or younger teenager.
Tora is a young, intelligent, and friendly Nopon who dreams to become a Driver despite his lack of aptitude, and to follow in the footsteps of his father and grandfather by creating the first Artificial Blade. He highly looks up to Rex as a role model, calling him "Rex-Rex" (アニキ, Big Brother). Having spent most of his time in his house working on Poppi, Tora can be rather naive and awkward with others despite his good intentions. He has a large interest in cute or "blushy-crushy" (moe) things, particularly maids, and is usually very enthusiastic about showing it to others.
Story arc[edit]
Xenoblade Chronicles 2[edit]
Tora's first impact on the story is in Chapter 2, when he fires an explosive called the Boom Biter at Brighid and the Ardainian soldiers fighting against Rex and Nia; the bomb destroys a water pipe, incapacitating Brighid and allowing Rex and Pyra to flee, while Nia and Dromarch are captured. While Rex and Pyra are running, Tora gets their attention and offers his home as a hiding place from the Ardainian soldiers in pursuit of them. Tora explains that he interfered due to his dislike for the soldiers, whom he sees as bullies, and for his desire to test the Boom Biter. He then states that his real motive was his desire to befriend a Driver, which he states is due to his admiration for how Drivers and Blades combine their spirits, but does not elaborate further. Tora accompanies Rex and Pyra as they search for information on Nia's whereabouts, giving Pyra a Gormotti-inspired cloak to hide her Core Crystal.
As the party discusses their plans for rescuing Nia, Tora shows them his secret project: an artificial Blade which will, when completed, allow him to become a Driver despite lacking the aptitude needed to bond with Core Crystals; when he attempted to do so in the past, he suffered a nosebleed which lasted three days. Tora explains that the Blade was designed by his grandfather Soosoo, who died, and his father Tatazo, who disappeared and whom Tora hopes to find by becoming a famous and successful Driver, as Nopon Drivers are rare and so typically become celebrities. Although the Blade is nearly complete, Tora requires Rex's aid in acquiring the final parts to activate it, which he obtains. On a stormy night, Tora awakens the artificial Blade (which he names Poppi), though she originally possesses the personality of an idol and needs to be rebooted. He also shows Rex a game his grandfather designed called Tiger! Tiger!, which will allow them to win parts to upgrade Poppi's capabilities. Tora and Poppi help Rex break into the Titan Battleship where Nia and Dromarch are held, rescue them, and escape from a pursuing Morag.
As the party (which Nia has now committed to joining) ponders how to access the World Tree, Tora suggests that they request his uncle, Umon, who lives at the Gormotti titan's rear, to build and lend them a ship. Umon expresses amazement at how much Tora has grown since he last saw him, as well as his completion of the artificial Blade. After lying about why they need the ship, the party obtains it and sets sail, but is swallowed by the titan of Uraya. Tora looks up to Vandham, who accompanies them throughout Uraya towards Fonsa Myma, where they seek to meet a man who Vandham told them can help them reach Elysium, who turns out to be Cole.
After Vandham is killed fighting Malos and Akhos, Tora is bereft and confused as to why he is buried at the site of his death rather than home in Garfont Village, but Dromarch explains that to be buried where one fell is custom among mercenaries. The party heads to Mor Ardain en route to Indol, where Tora encounters Muimui, a Nopon who assisted his grandfather and father in the design of the artificial Blade when Tora was a child. After the party enjoys a stay at a hot spring at Muimui's recommendation, an explosion in the distance draws their attention; they pursue a cloaked figure on the rooftops of Alba Cavanich, which Tora is shocked to discover is Lila, the original artificial Blade that Tora's family was constructing before Tora built Poppi on his own. After the party is forced to fight her and forces her to retreat, Tora explains her (and his) origin story.
Tora, Soosoo, and Tatazo all wanted to be Drivers, but all lacked the aptitude to do so and decided to construct an artificial Blade they could use, which ended up being Lila. They made great strides in her development alongside Muimui, but one day the laboratory was attacked by a masked Nopon (who is obviously Muimui, though the young Tora did not realize this) and a squad of Tirkin. Soosoo was shot and killed, and Tatazo handed Tora a toolbox and implored him to flee and someday finish the artificial Blade they started. After this, Tora hid out in Torigoth and constructed Poppi based on the blueprint and ether furnace Tatazo left him. Tora notes that Lila was unfinished when the lab was attacked, meaning that in order for her to be completed, Tatazo must be alive somewhere. After the conversation, the party is attacked by Morag, Brighid, and an Ardainian squadron who mistake Poppi for Lila; after Niranira clears the situation up, Tora demands a year's worth of Tasty Sausages as compensation. The party agrees to cooperate with Morag in searching for Lila and Tatazo.
The search leads the party to the Old Factory, where Tora correctly predicts that Lila and Tatazo are. After sneaking through the entrance to the factory and discovering that artificial Blades are being mass produced, Tora finds Tatazo and reunites with him, causing Mythra to shed a tear. Muimui reveals himself to be a villain, and sends a squad of Tirkin to fight the party, who easily kill the Tirkins. Bana then reveals that he was the mastermind behind Tatazo's kidnapping and the mass production of artificial Blades, in order to make as much money as possible. Muimui explains that they coveted Poppi's unique ether furnace and lured her to the Old Factory in order to obtain it. Bana then sends Lila to fight the party, who ends up in a one-on-one fight against Poppi. Although Lila is the superior technology, Poppi's bond with Tora allows her to come out victorious, though Tatazo stops her before she is about to destroy Lila for good, explaining that Lila is his only connection to his own father, Soosoo. Bana commands that Lila self-destruct to destroy the party, but she rips out her control device to prevent this. As she is in critical condition, Tora stays with Poppi and Tatazo to tend to her while Rex and Nia pursue Bana and Muimui.
As Rex and Nia struggle against Bana's ultimate weapon, the gigantic artificial Blade Rosa, Tora dramatically enters alongside a radiant Poppi, who transforms into a more powerful form known as Poppi QT thanks to integrating her ether furnace with Lila's, whom Poppi refers to as her older sister. With this newfound power, the party is able to defeat Rosa and capture Muimui, although Bana eventually gets away after the party first has to deal with Mikhail and Patroka.
After Chapter 4, Tora's role in the story becomes diminished. Most of his major contributions are more so thanks to Poppi; he assists her in allowing the party to escape from a prison in Tantal by using one of Brighid's ether crystals to power an art from Poppi despite their chamber nullifying ether. In the World Tree, he suggests to Rex and Mythra that they fly on Poppi's boosters towards the attacking Indoline titan in order to prevent it from amplifying Amalthus's power to control Blades and Titans. In the First Low Orbit Station, Rex encounters and defeats a phantasm of Tora, who decries how unfair it is that Rex is unable to be a Driver while he cannot; the phantasm is based on Rex's anxieties regarding what his friends may think of him deep down. In the ending, Tora is seen comforting Poppi as she cries after telling Rex she cannot fly him over to Pneuma, then taking in the new world with all the others.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3[edit]
Tora makes a brief appearance during Nia's narration on how Aionios came to be, overlooking the construction of the Alrest half of Origin along with Nia and three unidentified individuals. Tora also made an appearance in a photograph of the party as the world splits back into Alrest and Bionis respectively.
Lore[edit]
- Tora learned to play the Whispercorder when he was five years old.
As a playable character[edit]
- Main article: Tora/Gameplay (XC2)
As Tora is not a real Driver, his own gameplay is fairly limited, having access to very few predetermined Blades. These Blades are very good, however, and while his own arts are somewhat locked into making him two parts defender and one part attacker, with proper investment he can be carried into being the best player-controlled character in the game.
As an NPC[edit]
Tora can first be found on the Indoline Titan Ship at the very beginning of Chapter 5. He can later be found at Messet Point, during the party's stay in Fonsett Village.
Dialogue[edit]
Indoline Titan Ship[edit]
Expecially now Rex-Rex invited to meet most special person in Indol! Rex-Rex even more amazing than Tora thought?
Fonsett Village[edit]
Looks like can probably salvage very intriguing things here! Just as interesting as Mor Ardain!
Anyway, Tora stay here for now. Friends go have fun and relax!
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]
Tora appears in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a Spirit. He also appears on the Cloud Sea of Alrest stage in the background alongside his Blade, Poppi.
Trivia[edit]
- In Japanese, Tora is voiced by Ai Nonaka, who also voices the 100-Series Observational Realians in Xenosaga Episode II and Xenosaga Episode III.
