The trial version of Xenosaga EPISODE II (ゼノサーガエピソードII 善悪 (ぜんあく)彼岸 (ひがん) 体験版 (たいけんばん)) is, as its name implies, a demonstration of Xenosaga Episode II that was included in Xenosaga Freaks. It covers the prologue set during the Miltian Conflict fourteen years ago. While the game is the same, there are some notable changes compared to the final version of the game. Since Xenosaga Freaks was a Japan-exclusive release, this demo is only available with Japanese voices and texts.

List of differences[edit]

Gameplay[edit]

  • The loading screens are somewhat longer.
  • Save points and their tutorial are not present.
  • There's no tutorial for destroying field obstacles.
  • Multiple camera angles are different.
  • There's no tutorial on how to change the target to destroy field obstacles.
  • During tutorials, headers are coloured grey, instead of yellow like in the final game. Also, sometimes the text is changed (i.e. the positional tutorial is cut).
  • The E.S. tutorial goes over the Move, Change, and Escape menu options, as well as the IA (Intercept Attack) mechanic.
  • There are no dialogue boxes after the first tutorial fight.
  • There's no tutorial for traps.
  • When Jin Uzuki joins the party, Ziggy and Shion do so too.
  • Margulis has 1200 HP, instead of 1000 HP like in the final game.

Cutscenes[edit]

  • The game immediately starts with the E.S. Asher being launched via an overhead rail to the sky; the presentation of Canaan and previous cutscenes present in the final game are cut. Also, the music in this cutscene is the image theme of Xenosaga II, instead of Xenosaga II opening theme. Lastly, there's no SFX or voice lines, only music.
  • The credits and the titlecard are shown while the E.S. is flying, and not before it is launched like in the final game.
  • Before descending to the streets of Miltia, there's a trailer with cutscenes from the final game. This trailer has spoilery-scenes, like the destruction of Old Miltia.
  • The scene where chaos and Canaan talk when they arrive to the Streets of Miltia is cut.
  • The second cutscene when chaos tells Canaan about the dangers of the Zohar spiralling out of control is cut.
  • The cutscene where Jin says the U-TIC Organization has begun the Miltian Conflict is cut.
  • The Jin vs. Margulis fight is cut by a "映像特典" (Bonus video) textcard.
    • This Bonus video shows multiple cutscenes of the final game with somewhat big spoilers (like Cecily and Cathe being amputated), the background music is communication breakdown (In this instance the vocals of the song are present, whereas the two instances where this song play don't have vocals). Lastly, there's a screen of KOS-MOS just awakened as KOS-MOS ver.2 in the Vector Second Division with the logo of the game and a "COMING SOON ! !"

Minor changes[edit]

  • The Dolby Digital Pro Logic II logo is not present upon booting the game.
  • The "Produced by NAMCO" line is not present upon booting the game.
  • The logo during the title screen is different, now it has a "体験版" (trial version). Also, the "®" and the "DISC 1" are missing from the screen.
  • There's no possibility to load save files from Xenosaga Episode I, Xenosaga Episode I Reloaded or Xenosaga Freaks
