Skirmish
Skirmishes are elements of the overworld in Xenoblade Chronicles 3. They are battles between two opposing factions.
Skirmishes are identified by the crossed swords icon above the clashing factions.
Mechanics[edit]
To start a skirmish, the party can approach the battle. A UI prompt opens to choose which side. Once a side is chosen, the party cannot leave combat until they complete the skirmish or perish. Completing a skirmish awards Silver Nopon Coins, affinity to a Colony, or EXP depending on the faction. Skirmishes "respawn" like other enemies; they can be replayed, but will yield no further rewards.
Some skirmishes only allow the party to help one side. This typically happens when said side consists of human soldiers.

Interventions[edit]
In Future Redeemed, the equivalent of skirmishes are Interventions. These, like skirmishes, consist of two factions fighting it out in the overworld, and the party can jump in the fight. There are, however, several differences:
- The party is not offered a choice on which side to help; the directive is always to "Save the underdogs".
- Once an intervention is concluded, it does not "respawn". A symbol appears on the map indicating that an intervention has taken place there.
Several City survivors are rescued via an intervention. Interventions are an Affinity Goal, and completing all of them within a region awards Affinity Points for that region.
