Sigard Harcourt is a supporting of Xenogears. He pilots the Yggdrasil, and an ally to Fei and his group.

Appearance and Personality

Sigurd has gray, shoulder length hair and a blue left eye. His right eye was lost in an accident and he wears a black eyepatch over it. While he is Bart's half-brother, he has a darker skin tone than him, which is a characteristic inherited from his mother.

Sigurd is typically a calm and intelligent person but may occasionally scold Bart if necessary. He has a great deal of admiration for his younger half-brother and supports him in attempts to take back the throne of Aveh.

Story arc

History

Sigurd was born in the pagan town of Noin on the Aveh border. His father was King Edbart IV and his mother was Shalimar, the younger sister of the chief of the town. Aveh and Noin had friendly ties and Edbart would occasionally visit there, making him and Shalimar old friends. Eventually she would become pregnant with Sigurd. She became ill with a white blood cell sickness. Knowing the fact that it was a terminal illness, she broke off contact with Edbart, not revealing the truth to him. Edbart's heart was broken, but he returned to Bledavik and would years later marry Bart's mother. Shalimar would live until Sigurd was 11. Sigurd's uncle Mimil would help raise him.

Sigurd met his father for the first time at the funeral for his mother and realized he was his son. Edbart kept Sigurd's lineage a secret to honor Shalimar, but took him in as a personal knight of the crown prince. At the age of 13, Sigurd visited Noin and was captured by Solaris forces. He was taken to be used as a test subject due to his high affinity with Omnigears and was subjected to a significant amount of drugs. He would be helped by Ramsus however and permitted into Jugend. Due to his drug dependence he stayed at Jessie's house for a time. He also befriended Hyuga (Citan) at the time and was eligible for the Elements.

2 years later, at the age of 17, while reading data files he learned of the coup that occurred in Aveh that resulted in the death of his father. He was able to achieve full independence from his drug addition and escaped from Solaris such that he could rescue his half-brother Bart and cousin Margie. Ramsus was dismayed by his departure.

Since that time Sigurd has remained by Bart's side and supported him as his first mate on the Yggdrasil. Two years before the events of the game his right eye was injured in a slave generator accident, an accident that also claimed Bart's left eye. Sigurd's eye was not injured in a manner that it wouldn't be able to recover, but he secretly offered up his right cornea to help in Bart's recovery.

Present Day

During the present day Sigurd continues to act as first mate for Bart on the Yggdrasil. He first appears when Bart launches an attack on an Aveh transport ship holding Fei and Citan. Citan is recovered in the aftermath and Sigurd immediately recognizes him as his old friend. He welcomes Citan as well as Fei into the trust of the Sand Pirates as they assist Bart with his attempt to retake the throne of Aveh. Sigurd had been keeping the fact that he once lived in Solaris a secret from Bart, but along with Citan they reveal their past relationship with Ramsus to Bart and Fei when the party visits Nisan. Sigurd joins in on the attempt to defeat Shakhan and take over Aveh after this, and remains with Bart and Maison as the Yggdrasil sinks after being destroyed by Id. He later appears in the Aquvy region when it is revealed that Bart found the craft he named the Yggdrasil 2 and remains in a similar support role.

When Shakhan takes over Nisan, Sigurd takes part in another attempt to retake Aveh. He initially splits up from Bart and heads to Bledavik, but comes back with Citan and accompanies Bart into Fort Jasper where it is revealed that he has the Fatima Jasper, the blue eyes of the family that permit access to the omnigear Andvari. After Shakhan is defeated and Aveh is successfully liberated, Maison reveals to Bart that Sigurd is his half brother. Bart later hints to Sigurd that he already became aware of this through a mention of a brother in his father's will. Sigurd continues to assist Bart the rest of the game via the Yggdrasil.
