Seibzehn is a Gear piloted by Maria Balthasar in Xenogears.

Description[edit]

Seibzehn was created as part of the M Plan and is the trial version of a fusion between human and Gear. In a traditional Gear, there will always be a slowdown of the response in the human and the commands provided to the Gear. The thought process in developing the Gear was that by using the thoughts of the brain to command the Gear, all parts can act in unison with exact timing. Nikolai Balthasar, an expert in neurological brain studies was responsible for developing the Gear with his wife and daughter held as hostages by Solaris. His wife, Claudia, proposed that she have herself fused with the Gear so as to facilitate their daughter Maria's ability to escape with it, which eventually happened. An artificial creation of gravity was also discovered as part of the Gear's development and loaded into the Gear.

Analysis[edit]

While originally developed by Solaris, Seibzehn is currently affiliated with Shevat and is piloted by Maria, who is now a teenager. After spending time with her grandfather Balthasar, Maria became an accomplished pilot of Seibzehn and now acts as a guardian of Shevat. Both she and the Gear become the subject of rumors among land dwellers. The party encompasses Maria and Seibzehn at the top of Babel Tower and are forced to do battle with them. Following this the party enters Shevat. When Dominia infiltrates Shevat, the party is forced to travel through various shafts in order to make it back to the dock where Seibzehn is located. An invasion launched by Seibzehn's sister Gear Achtzehn occurs shortly afterwards. Maria is reluctant at first to fight her father, whose voice appears from the Gear, but ultimately decides to take part. As part of the battle Seibzehn holds its ground and ultimately destroys the Achtzehn without Maria's input necessary. Following this Maria joins the party and Seibzehn can be used throughout Gear battles the remainder of the game. When the party heads to Shevat, Seibzehn's heavy particle cannon is used to permit entry and the Gear stays outside until the party escapes. Unlike most of the other party members, Maria does not receive an omnigear upgrade for Seibzehn, although concept art for it can be found in Perfect Works.
