The World That You Intended[edit]
A flashback plays. A younger Amalthus pays his respects to a comically large pile of dead Ardainian soldiers. He walks through a camp of presumably refugees, nodding to a pair of kids he passes by that nod back to him, with a smile on his face. A bell rings as refugees walk across the desolate landscape. In presumably another camp, he makes a speech to those gathered. When wounded soldiers are spread across the ground, he helps the refugees tend to them, fixing a wrap around a grateful man's head.
Amalthus walks through a forest. He comes upon a house with the door ajar, the sound of a baby crying somewhere, and someone lying in the front yard. Inside, a thief is blundering through possessions, testing the weight of a gizmo while hunched over another possibly dead body. The crying baby is on the floor nearby. The criminal takes out a knife and lifts it high, but Amalthus grabs his wrist. The thief turns in surprise - it's the man he had saved earlier, the bandage still wrapped around his head. He starts trying to talk his way out of it, but screams as the scene steps outside.[1]
Amalthus takes the crying baby and carries it over to the nearby cliffside, from where the World Tree can be seen. He shushes it and slowly places a hand on its head for a moment. He then looks up at the tree.

Amalthus
(forlorn)
(forlorn)
O Architect! Is this the world that you intended?[2]
Tora
That too close, meh! If we just a bit higher, it would have hit us!
Rex
Where did-
They spot Mor Ardain over there.
Mòrag
Mor Ardain?! Impossible!
The game takes its sweet time loading the throne room of Mor Ardain because it has to guarantee the music syncs even if the load is slower than usual. A captain is in the room with Niall.
Captain
Your Majesty, are you hurt?
Niall
What happened?
Captain
The Titan just released a vast amount of energy from its chest!
We think the brownout may be linked to that.
We think the brownout may be linked to that.
Someone else runs in and updates the captain on something.
Captain
Majesty!
We strayed off course but we've managed to confirm our current position!
We strayed off course but we've managed to confirm our current position!
Niall
Where are we?
Captain
Look!
He looks out the window to see that the World Tree is way too close.
Niall
T-that's...
The Ardainian Titan moves its head.
Niall
Again...?
Curses! Mor Ardain can't afford to lose any more energy!
Curses! Mor Ardain can't afford to lose any more energy!
Seen from the World Tree, the Titan's emitters start to glow again.
Rex
It's glowing...
Gramps
Is it going to shoot again? That is not good...
The Ardainian Titan is said to be at the end of its lifespan.
If it were to release any more of the ether energy stored within its body...
The Ardainian Titan is said to be at the end of its lifespan.
If it were to release any more of the ether energy stored within its body...
Nia
What would happen?
A short "what if" plays over Gramps's words.
Gramps
It would collapse, its joints giving way under its own weight...
It wasn't a very impressive "what if", there was just a few explosions and it leaned forwards a bit. Now though, it fires again. The shot just misses the Marsanes and hits the World Tree in a wooden spot this time, causing another big explosion. Those on the Marsanes - Akhos, Patroka, and Mikhail - feel it.
Akhos
Whoa!
Patroka
Urgh-!
Akhos
Urgh...! Now he summons even Titans?!
Patroka
Akhos, over there!
Akhos
What?! Uraya?!
Curse that Amalthus... Is every Titan under his control?
Curse that Amalthus... Is every Titan under his control?
Queen Raqura of Uraya and her aides are having a similar reaction as the ground shakes.
Soldier
My Queen! Is that-?!
Raqura
The World Tree...
Mor Ardain, Indol...
What the blazes is going on out there?
Mor Ardain, Indol...
What the blazes is going on out there?
The Urayan Titan fires a mass of curved beams from atop its head. They scatter across the World Tree and make a lot of big booms close to the party, who get knocked around.
Zeke
Argh!
Pandoria
Eeyaaa-!
Pandoria gets tossed off the nearby edge.
Zeke
Pandy!
Zeke grabs her without much issue.
The scene returns to the Marsanes.
Akhos
This is madness. Does he mean to gather all the Titans in one place...?
Mikhail
Akhos! Patroka!
Patroka
Mik?!
Mikhail is still in the bottom room.
Akhos
What is this all of a sudden?
Mikhail
We must be ready for the worst.
Patroka
But what about Indol?! They're gathering Titans from-
Mikhail
I'll deal with it.
Akhos
Deal with it? Alone? Don't be a fool!
Mikhail
It's fine. I put this all together in the first place, remember?
I can control everything from here. Besides...
I can control everything from here. Besides...
He looks back at Lora's frozen body.
Mikhail
I'm not exactly alone here.
Patroka
(worried for a change)
(worried for a change)
Mik...
Mikhail
Go. And do what I can't.
There's a long pause.
Akhos
OK.
There's another long pause.
Akhos
Patroka!
She makes a worrywart sort of noise, but follows Akhos as he turns to leave.
Mikhail
(genuinely)
(genuinely)
Patroka!
I love you.
I love you.
Patroka
(b-b-baka)
(b-b-baka)
You are so gross, Mik.
Make sure you come back alive s-so I can punch you for saying that.
Make sure you come back alive s-so I can punch you for saying that.
Mikhail
That's...a deal.
He places his hands on the controls in front of him. The Marsanes begins to transform. Once the long sequence is complete, it is no longer a warship, but a humanoid mech. The party watches with surprise.
Rex
Their ship, it's...!
Gramps
That shape... It is just like a Titan.
Mikhail readies himself.
Mikhail
You old fool. Here I come!
The Marsanes jets forward, rears its fist back, and punches the Indol Titan in the face. It roars in unhappiness.
Zeke
So it begins.
Now's the time! Let's get after Jin.
Now's the time! Let's get after Jin.
Rex
But, the Titans...
Mòrag
Rex, let's focus on what we can do right now.
Rex
Mòrag...
Mòrag
Don't worry. The Emperor's my brother, after all.
Rex
...I'm on it.
Mor Ardain Under Fire[edit]
♫
The party gets literally 40 meters before something else happens: Mor Ardain fires another laser. The Marsanes projects a shield from its palm to block it, but the effort still knocks it back.
Mikhail
Gah, I've had it! You're done!
He shoots a wrist beam that cuts across the Ardainian Titan's body. It rears back slightly with an air of mild confusion.
The game has to load the Mor Ardain map again. (Can't be pre-rendered, it has to match the current time of day.) Those in the throne room feel the impact.
Captain
Your Majesty!
Niall
I'm OK. Issue the evacuation order across the capital.
All army vessels can be used, including my private ones.
Save as many as possible!

Save as many as possible!
Captain
You first, sire!
Niall
Don't mind me! Hurry, now!
Mor Ardain cannot hold, unfortunate though it may be...
Mor Ardain cannot hold, unfortunate though it may be...
Captain
Majesty...
Niall
Go!
Captain
Sir!
The two salute and run off. Niall looks into the distance.
Niall
Dear sister...if you're there... Please...
Please... Save Mor Ardain and the world.
Please... Save Mor Ardain and the world.
The scene moves to Indol. Hector turns to give Amalthus an update.
Hector
Your Eminence, the foes have been sighted.
Amalthus
The lost technology of old Torna? How astounding it is that it still works...
Mikhail appears on the comm screen.
Mikhail
Surprised, eh? There are still a few of us hanging on.
Amalthus
A survivor.
Flesh Eater. You followed him down that dark path.
Flesh Eater. You followed him down that dark path.
Mikhail
(unconcerned)
(unconcerned)
Hah...
Amalthus
In that case...
Amalthus focuses Haze's power. The vortex atop Indol intensifies and casts a wave over the Marsanes.
Amalthus
Hm?
Mikhail
Oh, nice try! But that's not gonna work on me!
And that's because you and I are the same!
And that's because you and I are the same!
Amalthus
What?!
Mikhail
I am...a Blade Eater!
Amalthus
Impossible.
The Blade Eater technology is not known outside the Praetorium!
The Blade Eater technology is not known outside the Praetorium!
Mikhail
You're right.
But that doesn't mean you're the only one.
Or have you forgotten what you did before implanting your Core Crystal?!
But that doesn't mean you're the only one.
Or have you forgotten what you did before implanting your Core Crystal?!
Amalthus thinks for a moment and then gasps.
A short flashback plays. In this same Audience Chamber, Amalthus uses his power to place a Core Crystal inside the chest of a floating, unconscious Gormotti. His body flashes. Others of multiple races stand off to the side in varying degrees of worry. Among them is Mikhail as a child.
Amalthus
You don't mean...you are one of the refugees from back then...?
But all of them were...
But all of them were...
Mikhail
...Disposed of, right?
Sure, you tried. But some of us weren't about to die that easily.
I lived on!
Sure, you tried. But some of us weren't about to die that easily.
I lived on!
The Marsanes reaches out to grab Indol with both hands. Mikhail sees the people still living in the refugee camp scattering in panic. He's pissed.
Mikhail
You didn't even evacuate them.
You're the same as ever, Amalthus!
You're the same as ever, Amalthus!
He throws Indol bodily towards the World Tree, then punches its head into it for good measure.
Mikhail
I'm sorry...
But this is a fight I can't back down from!
But this is a fight I can't back down from!
Before he can continue the beating, another beam hits the mech in the back, and he goes "Gh-?!" with the impact. Tantal has arrived.
Zeke
Dad!
Brighid
Tantal too?!
Zeke
Why?! Pandy!
Pandoria
It's no use, my words can't reach him anymore.
Zeke
Dammitall... What the hell is the Praetor thinking?
At this rate, he'll destroy Alrest before Malos does!
At this rate, he'll destroy Alrest before Malos does!
Mòrag
Desperation.
Zeke
What d'ya mean?
Mòrag
Desperation at not getting the Aegis.
They watch the Marsanes circle around Indol in the distance.
Mòrag
That man...
What's his plan? Why would he be so intent on obtaining the Aegis?
What's his plan? Why would he be so intent on obtaining the Aegis?
Rex
We've...we've gotta do something to stop the Titans fighting.
Zeke
That's easy to say, but what can we do about it when they're all the way out there?
Rex
...Got it! The glowing pillars!
Just then, when one of the pillars got wrecked, Amalthus's power got weaker for a moment!
Just then, when one of the pillars got wrecked, Amalthus's power got weaker for a moment!
Nia
So if we smash the pillars, he'll lose control over the Titans...?
Rex
It's worth a shot! OK. Mythra?
It's actually Pyra who's there right now. She swaps over.
Mythra
And we only want to hit the pillars?
She thinks (shown as a flashback) about how much the Marsanes has been knocking Indol around.
Rex
Yeah.
Mythra
It's moving far too much, I can't get a clear shot...
The think-flashback ends.
Mythra
This isn't going to work.
Rex
Oh man...
Pyra
(I know - Mythra!)
Mythra
What?
Pyra reappears.
Pyra
If we can get a little closer, we might be able to do something.
Rex
Is that true, Pyra?
Pyra
Probably! Think back, do you remember our fight against Jin?
By rewriting the physical laws of the surroundings...
we were able to match Jin's speed.
If we rewrote them in the same way, in the midst of battle between those two...
By rewriting the physical laws of the surroundings...
we were able to match Jin's speed.
If we rewrote them in the same way, in the midst of battle between those two...
Mythra takes over again.
Mythra
From our point of view, it'll be like they've frozen in place, huh...? OK...
Nia
But how do we get there?
Tora
Ha! Tora have good suggestion!
Poppi!
Think you could grab Mythra and Rex-Rex and carry up there?
Poppi!
Think you could grab Mythra and Rex-Rex and carry up there?
Poppi α
Yes! Poppi can carry two people no problem!
Tora
Ta-daa!
Rex
OK, let's do it! Everyone else after Jin!
Zeke
Hang on!
Rex
We don't have time to argue here.
Don't worry. We're going to make this work. Right?
Don't worry. We're going to make this work. Right?
Mythra
Right!
Tora
Rex-Rex! Please remember, Poppi booster time limited!
Rex
Understood! We'll get as close as we can!
Surgical Strike[edit]
The group's ascended enough to find a good launch point for the plan. The Marsanes has Indol in its grip.
Rex
Poppi!
You're up!
You're up!
Poppi α
Poppi got it!
She hops off the edge and hovers in place.
Poppi α
Both friends hold tight!
Rex
Let's go!
Rex and Mythra each take one of Poppi's hands. She starts to fly forward.
Amalthus sees them coming on his viewscreen and is confused.
Amalthus sees them coming on his viewscreen and is confused.
Amalthus
Rex and the Aegis?
What are they doing?
What are they doing?
He then figures it out and panics.
Amalthus
Unless...!
Amalthus
Open fire! Don't let them near!
Indol starts to emit smaller, personnel-sized shots towards the trio. Poppi makes a show of dodging them more flashily than strictly necessary, with one big jolt making the other two grunt in exertion from hanging on.
Poppi α
Rex!!![3]
Rex nods. Poppi does a flip and chucks the two forward. Mythra uses her Blade barrier to protect them as they head in head-on towards Indol's head.
Mythra
Rex!
Rex
Just do it from here, OK?
Mythra
OK!
Rex
We're in a good spot! Let's go!
Pneuma comes out. Rex lifts his sword and does a "hee-yah" as he uses it to produce a flash of energy in a huge radius. Pneuma stares at the three remaining pillars atop Indol.
Pneuma
I've locked on. Siren!
Three consecutive beams are called down, striking the pillars. They all fall down. A pulse of feedback knocks Rex and Pneuma back, towards the World Tree.
Rex
Pyra!Mythra![Pneuma]!
He reaches down for her as they fall.
Pneuma
Rex!
They slowly get closer and shortly grab each other. Rex fires his anchor at a spindle of metal sticking out of the World Tree.
Rex
Come on...![4]
The anchor catches the much larger-than-it-looked spindle. Rex and Pneuma use it to swing towards a convenient platform and land on it. Somehow the rest of the party is all very close by. Pneuma reverts to Mythra.
Rex
Did it work?!
The summoned Titans are not currently doing anything.
Nia
It's...stopped?
Zeke
Our chum's only gone and done it!
Poppi rejoins the group.
Tora
Poppi do Tora proud!
Poppi α
No problem at all, Masterpon!
Amalthus's viewscreen shows that the vortex around Indol is completely dissipated.
Hector
Eminence! The amp towers are-
Amalthus
Curse those fools...
He clutches his face in anger.
Amalthus
Do you even know what you've done?!
Indol fires a blast towards the party. It seems to be aimed well because they prepare to get hit by it, but instead, they look up in surprise to see that the Marsanes has gotten in the way.
Nia
Wh-why?
Mikhail's voice is projected from the mech.
Mikhail
What are you hanging around here for? Go!
Nia
That voice...Mik? That you?
Mikhail
You're chasing Jin and Malos, right? I said go!
Nia
Why would you-
Mikhail
Beats me. I don't even know any more.
Nia
Mikhail...?
Mikhail
I really hate this world. Like, really. And humans most of all.
Nia
You used to BE human!
He wags a "don't give me that" finger at her, as if she can see it.
Mikhail
But, you know what? There were people I loved, once.
He thinks about the scene at Addam's camp, with Addam, Mythra, Lora, Jin, Haze, and himself having dinner together.
Mikhail
When I look at you guys, it reminds me of them.
I wonder...
If the people I loved were still around, would things be...different?
I wonder that, and I start doubting myself.
I wonder...
If the people I loved were still around, would things be...different?
I wonder that, and I start doubting myself.
Rex
Mikhail...
Mikhail
It's Rex, right?
Rex
Yeah...
Mikhail
Have you found your answer?
Rex
I have, and it's pretty spectacular.
Mikhail
I see. Well then...
I'll leave Jin to you.
Now go! Get after him already!
Tell him your answer!
I'll leave Jin to you.
Now go! Get after him already!
Tell him your answer!
The party starts to run onward. The Marsanes turns around. Mikhail re-focuses himself.
Mikhail
Hm.
Indol fires again. The Marsanes just tanks the shots as it approaches.
Mikhail
Amalthus... Time to end this!
He grabs Indol by the neck and throws it into the World Tree.
Mikhail
Uwaagh![5]
Amalthus
Fool. Who do you take me for?!
Indol turns to face the incoming Marsanes with a laser charging in its mouth.
A flashback plays. The child Mikhail is alone in a destroyed village somewhere, just kinda standing there while crying.
Lora
What happened? Are you alone?
Lora and Jin have found him.
Jin
Looks like the only survivor.
These burn patterns don't look like Malos's handiwork. Must've been humans...
Looting and pillaging while the world burns.
These burn patterns don't look like Malos's handiwork. Must've been humans...
Looting and pillaging while the world burns.
Lora
Hey, it's okay. Would you like to come with us?
Mikhail looks up.
Lora
You don't have to worry, really. We're all good people, promise.
Jin kneels down for better eye contact.
Jin
Can you walk?
Mik nods.
Jin
You can. Good going.
Jin pats him on the head, then gets up and helps guide him onward.
The flashback ends.
The flashback ends.
Mikhail
Forgive us, Jin.
We're going on ahead.
We're going on ahead.
Seen from a great distance, the final shot from Indol ends the Marsanes, its explosion dwarfing the Titan.
Somewhere in the World Tree, Akhos and Patroka hear the massive boom.
Somewhere in the World Tree, Akhos and Patroka hear the massive boom.
Patroka
Ah!
Mikhail...
Mikhail...
The Aftermath[edit]
The party has turned back to watch what just happened.
Mòrag
Indol...it's...
Poppi α
It sinking...
Zeke
Never thought I'd see the day when Torna of all people would be saving our hides.
Nia
Mikhail...
We can't let his effort go to waste.
We can't let his effort go to waste.
Rex
You're right.
Let's go after Jin!
I have to have a word with him about the answer I found!
Let's go after Jin!
I have to have a word with him about the answer I found!
Who Is Weak and Who Is Not[edit]
The party has exited Alioth, Elevator 3 to find a very long and featureless hallway.
A flashback begins. Zeke and Amalthus are looking down at the refugee camp in Indol.
A flashback begins. Zeke and Amalthus are looking down at the refugee camp in Indol.
Amalthus
What do you see?
Zeke
What do I see? I see a bunch of people struggling to stay alive.
Same as almost everyone else on Alrest right now.[6]
Same as almost everyone else on Alrest right now.[6]
Amalthus
Zeke. Have you ever taken a person's life?
Zeke
Can't say I have. Never seen the need for it, myself.
Amalthus
Oh...?
Zeke
Why does anyone kill others?
Because they're in your way, or because you can't bear the sight of 'em.
You kill because you're weak.
But I'm not weak. So I don't need to kill anyone.
And I don't mean physically, yeah?
I mean in here.
Because they're in your way, or because you can't bear the sight of 'em.
You kill because you're weak.
But I'm not weak. So I don't need to kill anyone.
And I don't mean physically, yeah?
I mean in here.
He points a thumb to his heart.
Amalthus
I suppose...that makes me weak, then.
But that weakness is why I'm standing here today...
But that weakness is why I'm standing here today...
Zeke
So you hate them? Humans.
Amalthus
No...
I hate this world.
I hate this world.
Zeke doesn't seem to know what to make of this.
Back in the present, Zeke is thinking about this conversation.
Zeke
Chum!
Rex
Huh?
Zeke
Do you like this world?
Rex
Uh, what?
Zeke
Just give me a straight answer.
Rex
Yeah.
Sure, there's plenty of room for improvement...
But then, there's also plenty of stuff that's awesome.
Sure, there's plenty of room for improvement...
But then, there's also plenty of stuff that's awesome.
Zeke
What about us?
Rex
Huh?
Nia
(cheeky)
(cheeky)
Ah! I think Shellhead's about to propose.
Pyra
Wha-?
Zeke
(I'm trying to have a serious moment here)
(I'm trying to have a serious moment here)
Fleabag! I mean, how do you feel about US? People.
Rex
Phew, I was worried then!
Zeke
You should be so lucky!
Anyway, what's your answer?
Anyway, what's your answer?
Rex
Ooh, that's a tough one.
People can be fun to be around, but sometimes they're hard to deal with.
And then there's mean types like that Bana...
People can be fun to be around, but sometimes they're hard to deal with.
And then there's mean types like that Bana...
Nia
For sure.
Rex
But...
Life's about taking the good with the bad, right? So yeah, I like people.
And... I like myself, and I'm people.
Life's about taking the good with the bad, right? So yeah, I like people.
And... I like myself, and I'm people.
Nia
All right, big 'ead.
Zeke
Ha-ha-ha... I see! Well, that's you all over. I'm relieved.
Rex
What?
Zeke
Well...
Rex makes a "?" sound.
Zeke
Suppose a guy who hated himself...had the power that you do.
If someone like that were to meet the Architect...
I wouldn't be surprised if they wished... for the whole world to disappear...
If someone like that were to meet the Architect...
I wouldn't be surprised if they wished... for the whole world to disappear...
Told To Wait[edit]
Jin and Malos are in a large, empty room. Jin stops walking towards the doors on the curved wall. Malos turns around.
Malos
What's up, Jin?
Jin turns around to the doors on the flat wall they presumably came in from.
Jin
...So this is where it ends...
Malos
Huh? You say something?
Jin
No.
I'll stay here. You go fulfill our goal.
I'll stay here. You go fulfill our goal.
Malos
What're you saying? We promised we'd go together, didn't we?
Jin
We did once...
He thinks about the rainy alley where Malos found him.
Malos
You okay?
Jin
I'm just waiting...
Malos
...For the boy?
Jin
I was told to wait...
Jin sees an unhappy Lora standing in front of him. He turns away, back to Malos.
Jin
I'll be watching...
all of you.
all of you.
Malos
Are you sure?
Jin
I am...
Malos pauses, makes a slight "this guy" head shake, and approaches. He gives Jin a one-armed hug and whispers something in his ear, then leaves. Jin turns back towards the entrace.
A flashback begins. Jin and Lora are in a room with several beds, perhaps an inn.
Old man
(offscreen)
(offscreen)
...Hey, you!
Someone else enters the room. Maybe he's the inn's owner.
Old man
You wouldn't happen to be Ornelia's former Blade, would you?
Jin
Ornelia? No, I'm...
Old man
From the Territorial Defense Corps! It's you!
Jin
What?
Old man
Ooh, I remember 'em well! Even though I was knee-high to a grasshopper back then...
With that sword slung across your back... You were so cool.
If you hadn't come when you did, our village would've been...
Oh yes!
The house you used to live in is still out there on the outskirts.

If you hadn't come when you did, our village would've been...
Oh yes!
The house you used to live in is still out there on the outskirts.
Jin
(interested)
(interested)
House?
The scene advances to the presumed house. Part of this flashback has been seen before, the upturned table is fairly recognizable. Jin holds a picture frame in his hands, of himself and several other people. He puts down the photo and spies a book on the shelf. He opens it.
Jin
This long war for independence will soon come to an end.
It is not only the war that will soon be over.
...Her life, too, is about to end.
And when she meets her end, so too will I.
It is not only the war that will soon be over.
...Her life, too, is about to end.
And when she meets her end, so too will I.
The flashback starts to flip back and forth between Jin reading this now, and Jin writing this in the past.
Jin
Unsullied by her death, I will merely return to my core...
to await my eventual reawakening.
I will sleep, as at the end of any other day.
When I awake, will I be the same person as before?
If the Architect does indeed exist, I wish I could ask him...
Who am I, truly?
Whence did I come, whither am I headed?
If I were a praying man, I'd pray this journal finds its way to you.
Trusting that it will, I will use these last words to pass down...
a means of carving the bond between myself and my partner into this flesh.
This is how it is done...

Jin starts to breathe heavily. Then he hears Lora speak, and hurriedly hides the book behind his back.
Lora
My... How terribly desolate...
I heard it's been 90 years, but...
I heard it's been 90 years, but...
She notices Jin looks a bit jumpy and stops looking around.
Lora
What is it? Did you remember something?
Jin
N-no... It's nothing.
Lora
Really? That's too bad. I would've liked to have learned about the old you.
Jin
I am...who I am. I do not change.
The flashback ends. Jin holds his/her/their heart. Then the entrance door opens.
Jin
You came.
The party runs in.
Rex
Jin!
Pyra
Are you alone? Where's Malos?
Jin
He went ahead.
Rex
Well then, what are you doing here?
Jin
Waiting. For you.
Rex
For us? Are you trying to stop us going after Malos?
Jin
Perhaps...
Rex makes kind of an exasperated sigh.
Jin
I want to see for myself.
If this world has any will of its own...
which one would it choose, you or Malos...?
If this world has any will of its own...
which one would it choose, you or Malos...?
Mythra
Then...you should let us pass.
Jin
That, I cannot do.
Mythra
But why? In your state, you should barely be able to stand!
You know if we fight now, you'll...!
You know if we fight now, you'll...!
Jin
You see right through me, Mythra.
...But I made a promise. I'll do whatever it takes to fulfill his desire.
...But I made a promise. I'll do whatever it takes to fulfill his desire.
Mythra
Even if it means your death?
Jin
Gladly.
Mythra
Jin...
Jin goes super mode.
Zeke
It looks like we won't get past without a fight, chum.
Rex
Seems so. We'll give it all we've got! C'mon!
Jin
As it should be. Come at me, boy!
Agent of the Architect's Will[edit]
Jin walks at the party.
Rex
...He's still got it...
But so do we!
But so do we!
Pneuma is brought out. Jin goes "Hmph!" as he shoots a wave of ice across the ground.
Rex
Oh no you don't!
Rex slashes at the oncoming ice, sending some of it back.
Jin
The power to manifest what you imagine...
Truly awesome...
That power comes from the Architect. Why do you wield it for mortals' sake?
Truly awesome...
That power comes from the Architect. Why do you wield it for mortals' sake?
They start to have a sword fight.
Rex
To get to Elysium!
Jin
And then what?
Open it up to humans?
Share it out between them?
Open it up to humans?
Share it out between them?
Rex
Do you even need to ask?! Obviously!
Jin
(more intensely)
(more intensely)
And then what?
Can't you see where that leads?
Can't you see where that leads?
Rex
What are you saying?!
Jin
Humans will make Elysium into another Morytha...
Just as they did with Torna, 500 years ago.
Just as they did with Torna, 500 years ago.
Rex
I won't let that happen!
Jin
And after you die? What then?
Who will stop the inevitable?!
Who will stop the inevitable?!
Rex
Isn't that...
Isn't that the reason that you Blades exist?!
Isn't that the reason that you Blades exist?!
Jin makes a "whuh" sort of noise.
Rex
And when I'm not around to stand by you in that effort...
Someone else will!
Someone else will!
He knocks the sword out of Jin's hand.
Rex
That's right. When a person dies, that's it for them.
But their thoughts and memories will always be passed on to someone else.
Isn't that the same with you Blades?
Your past selves get passed down to someone else to become your new selves...
Isn't that how you've always lived?
We're no different!
But their thoughts and memories will always be passed on to someone else.
Isn't that the same with you Blades?
Your past selves get passed down to someone else to become your new selves...
Isn't that how you've always lived?
We're no different!
Jin seems to not want to think about this, but does anyway. His awakening to Lora plays in his mind.
Jin
From now on, I'll protect you.
I'll keep you safe, always...
I'll keep you safe, always...
Jin
...[7]
Rex
Blades become Titans when their time is up...
And those Titans give birth to many new Blades.
All while forming the world beneath our feet.
It's awesome.
It's enough to make me envious.
And those Titans give birth to many new Blades.
All while forming the world beneath our feet.
It's awesome.
It's enough to make me envious.
Jin
Envious...of us?
Rex
So I'd like to ask the Architect.
Pyra, Mythra, all of you...
Why did he create all these incredible people?
Actually, I think I might already know the answer.
But I'd still like to check with the man himself.
Pyra, Mythra, all of you...
Why did he create all these incredible people?
Actually, I think I might already know the answer.
But I'd still like to check with the man himself.
Jin
To check your answer?
Rex
Yeah.
Jin
You...believe you know the reason we exist?
This has his attention for a moment, but then there's an impact sound from somewhere, and he doesn't react well to it.
Jin
Hrk-!
He falls to his knees, exhausted.
Akhos
Jin!
Akhos and Patroka have arrived from the side door and are approaching quickly.
Nia
Akhos! Patroka!
The party lets the two advance. Akhos goes up to Jin, while Patroka gets between them and Rex intending to fight him off.
Rex
Patroka...
Patroka
I won't let you kill Jin.
Jin
Stand down, Patroka.
Patroka
But-!
Jin
It is over for us now. There is nothing more.
We've done all that we have to.
We've done all that we have to.
Patroka
Jin...
It takes her a bit but she does stand down.
Patroka
Nia...
Nia
M-me?
Patroka
Your power... Can you use it on Jin...?
Nia
Well, sure... It'll only be a temporary measure, but...
She changes to Blade form and hustles over.
Patroka
Don't expect any thanks.
Nia
...[8]
Patroka
We'll go back first and prep Jin for treatment.
Akhos! Make yourself useful.
Akhos! Make yourself useful.
She starts to head off.
Akhos
Yeah, yeah. I got 'im.
As Patroka runs towards the side door, something appears or erupts from the floor in front of her. Whatever it is attacks. She grunts in distress and drops her weapon as she falls. The attacker is apparently some sort of glowing blue tentacle.
Akhos
Patroka!!!
A mass of blue tentacles emerges from the ground, followed by the thing they're attached to: some sort of creature covered in an amalgam of white plating and glowing blue nodules.
???
You will climb no further...
The being stands up to show it's bipedal, with extra-large glowing bits on its forehead and chest. The tentacles come out of its back. It has Amalthus's face.
Zeke
Wh-! Amalthus? Here?!
And...why does he look like that?!
And...why does he look like that?!
Amalthus reaches down towards Patroka. There's a cracking sound, and he pulls back his fist as it glows. The glow travels up his arm and into his body, pulsing from his chest.
Amalthus
If the Architect did send Blades down to this world... it was for my sake.
To find and raise cores containing more powerful, wondrous, unparalleled data...
That is why I created the cleansing procedure.
Behold the culmination of my work!
To find and raise cores containing more powerful, wondrous, unparalleled data...
That is why I created the cleansing procedure.
Behold the culmination of my work!
His whole body is visible for the first time. It would look like just a cool suit of armor had his proportions not changed. There's a visible hole in the floor behind him from where he came in.
Jin
You lunatic...
He took the cores from all those Blades...
So that was the reason for the cleansing...
He took the cores from all those Blades...
So that was the reason for the cleansing...
Amalthus
I am an agent of the Architect's will!
Mòrag
What is he saying?
Dromarch
Delusions of grandeur...
Pandoria
You can't just decide stuff like that, dude!
You're out of your damned mind!
You're out of your damned mind!
Amalthus
It is no delusion! Have you forgotten the Aegis's power?
That power...
Is it not the Aegis's power to erase worthless things from existence?!
Is that not the Architect's very will?!
That power...
Is it not the Aegis's power to erase worthless things from existence?!
Is that not the Architect's very will?!
Rex
Pyra and Mythra aren't like that!
Pneuma
...I just realized.
I know why Malos is so intent on scouring the world...
It's you, Amalthus.
Malos has become tainted by your influence...
I know why Malos is so intent on scouring the world...
It's you, Amalthus.
Malos has become tainted by your influence...
Amalthus
So what if he has? What's the problem?
You've had your little trip around Alrest...
You witnessed the state of Morytha!
Mankind will never change, no matter how many millennia pass!
You've had your little trip around Alrest...
You witnessed the state of Morytha!
Mankind will never change, no matter how many millennia pass!
Rex
You're the one who won't change.
That's exactly why you hate those who try to!
That's exactly why you hate those who try to!
An abbreviated flashback plays of the Indol army attacking the Tornan refugees, Lora being shot, and Lora dying.
Amalthus
And why should I have to change?
If I change, I lose everything.
If I change, I lose everything.
Amalthus
I lose my very self!
Who in their right mind would accept such a fate?!
That's why...!
Who in their right mind would accept such a fate?!
That's why...!
Zeke
You're weak, old man. The weakest of us all...
Akhos has made his way over to the motionless Patroka. He's clearly distraught.
Akhos
Patroka-?
A flashback begins. A masked Jin finishes killing some Indol guards onboard a ship. He turns to two people sitting by the wall: Akhos and Patroka, in civilian clothes. They don't look up at him.
Akhos
(an angry whimpering)
(an angry whimpering)
You wanna...kill us, huh?
Jin
(factually)
(factually)
You're not human...
Flesh Eaters...?
Flesh Eaters...?
Akhos
We were on our way to be transferred to Indol.
He stands up.
Akhos
My sister and I, from Tantal.
Jin
Sister?
Akhos holds out a locket.
Akhos
Here.
Jin looks at it. There's a photo of two people.
Akhos
The boy on the left, that was my Driver.
The right is Patroka's.
The right is Patroka's.
Jin
Patroka... Is that her name?
Akhos
(more comfortably)
(more comfortably)
Yes. I'm Akhos. Our Drivers were brother and sister.
That's why...
That's why...
Patroka
...we're siblings too, you're saying? What a dumb notion.
They're them, and we're us.
No relation whatsoever.
They're them, and we're us.
No relation whatsoever.
Akhos
Even so! These bodies contain the lives of two humans...
We are...connected.
We are...connected.
Patroka
I don't get why you bother...
Jin
Are you happy?
Akhos tries to "Huh?" but just gets a breath out.
Jin
I'm asking if it makes you happy, clinging to things like that.
Akhos
...That I don't know.
But...it's better than having...nothing...
It's important to me, and that gives me a reason...to go on.
To live for her...
But...it's better than having...nothing...
It's important to me, and that gives me a reason...to go on.
To live for her...
Patroka
...
Patroka stands up reluctantly.
The flashback ends. Akhos is mad.
Akhos
Gaaaah-!
He aims his bow at Amalthus.
Jin
Akhos, stop! He's...
Akhos fires. Amalthus uses a tentacle to slap the arrow down, and retaliates by grabbing Akhos with it.
Akhos
Ngahh-!
Jin
Akhos!
Akhos gets picked up.
Akhos
L-let me go, you monster...
Amalthus
(holding him over his head)
(holding him over his head)
How dare you...? How dare you look down on me?
You, a mere Blade whose very existence depends upon ours!
You, a mere Blade whose very existence depends upon ours!
Nia
Rex! He's got Akhos!
She tosses her weapon to Rex.
Rex
I'm on it!
Not on my watch!
Not on my watch!
He holds Nia's weapon in one hand and Pneuma's in the other, and uses them to send a single pulse of power at Amalthus. It doesn't do much but get a "Hmph!" out of him.
Nia
Grr... Let him go, pal!
She grabs her sword as she runs by Rex and attacks, but Amalthus just slaps her away. Mòrag sends a line of blue flame in his direction.
Mòrag
This is a strange situation. Fighting so hard to save a member of Torna.
Brighid
Indeed, but it seems like the right thing to do.
Mòrag
His aim is clear, and so is ours. Ngh-!
The two deal with his long-range tentacle attacks. Poppi comes in from offscreen to push one out of the way.
Mòrag
Thanks!
Poppi α
Friend welcome!
Tora
Poppi! Now not time for kind manners!
Another tentacle appears from behind, but it gets blasted by lightning.
Pandoria
I believe in returning favors. You owe me for that one!
Poppi α
Much thanks!
Amalthus
Urghh... How...?! Who do you people think you are?!
He emits an angry red aura. It pushes everyone back.
Several people
Whoa-!
Amalthus
Incorrigible whelps... Why would humans side with Blades?!
Zeke
Is he slow? He thinks it's a side to pick?
We share a bond...
you numbskull!
We're all friends here! We're in this thing together!
We share a bond...
you numbskull!
We're all friends here! We're in this thing together!
Amalthus
Bonds? Of friendship?
With these...trinkets?!
With these...trinkets?!
He grabs at Akhos's chest and pulls the Core Crystal straight out of his chest, then chucks him away.
Jin
Akhos!
Akhos
Tch... That was...
surprisingly painful...
If I were...
...still a Blade...
...this...wouldn't...
surprisingly painful...
If I were...
...still a Blade...
...this...wouldn't...
He shakily lifts a hand towards Jin.
The earlier flashback of Jin with Akhos and Patroka continues from about where it left off.
The earlier flashback of Jin with Akhos and Patroka continues from about where it left off.
Jin
Join me.
Akhos goes "Huh?". Jin holds out his hand.
Jin
My name is Jin. I am...just like you.
The two consider the offer, and Akhos reaches out.
Back in the present, Akhos's hand falls to the ground as he stops moving.
Back in the present, Akhos's hand falls to the ground as he stops moving.
Jin
(actually angry)
(actually angry)
Akhos!
Amalthus...
Amalthus...
It looks like he's about to do something, but Rex steps in front of him.
Rex
You stay right there!
He's human. So we should be the ones to kick his arse.
He's human. So we should be the ones to kick his arse.
Jin
I have a heart no less human than-
Rex
Then you better take good care of it!
That's why you came here... Right?
That's why you came here... Right?
Jin
Rex...
Rex
We're gonna break the 500-year-long curse right here!
Pneuma
Yeah!
Rex
Let's do it!
I Lived As You Wanted[edit]
The fight is presumably not going well for Amalthus.
Amalthus
I cannot end like this... Not until I've met the Architect...
Not until I've erased everything with my own hands-!
Not until I've erased everything with my own hands-!
Rex
Wha-?!
Amalthus has moved over to the door in the curved wall. He sends his many tentacles out to...do something to it, it's not really visible what's going on, but there's rumbling and creaking.
Dromarch
This is bad! The World Tree cannot take it!
There's a slightly better view now. It seems Amalthus has used the tentacles to grow a root-like structure around the door to block it off, while he stands in front of it and possibly entwined with it.
Zeke
How?! How's that bastard still standing, after the incredible thrashing we gave him...?
Mòrag
We must stop him!
The party starts to run at Amalthus. Jin grunts as he slowly gets up. Amalthus then fires tentacles at Jin. Rex goes "Wha-?!" and dashes over there.
Pneuma
Jin!
Rex and Pneuma both get in the way, but they are slapped out of the way.
Rex
Aaah-!
Pneuma
Ahhhh!
Rex is sent sideways. Pneuma ends up in Jin's arms.
Nia
Pyra! Rex!Mythra! Rex![Pneuma]! Rex!
Pneuma reverts to Mythra.
Jin
Mythra... You...
Mythra
D-don't get me wrong, OK?!
I couldn't let him get your core too, that's all. With it, he'd be unstoppable...!
I couldn't let him get your core too, that's all. With it, he'd be unstoppable...!
Lora closing her eyes flashes across Jin's mind.
Jin
Thank you...
Everyone else is currently busy trying to get through the bullet hell of tentacles protecting Amalthus.
Amalthus
All the cores, all the Architect's words...belong to me!
Jin
Hngahhh!
Jin forms a starburst of ice that protects him and Mythra from a tentacle attack and freezes the attackers solid. Amalthus seems concerned that it happened so easily.
Jin
Nia... Take care of them both...
Nia
I... I will.
She comes over to them. Jin moves Mythra in Nia's arms while she sets up a field that heals them plus Rex. Jin gets up and steps in front.
Nia
Jin...
Why didn't you kill me when I joined Rex and the others?
Why didn't you kill me when I joined Rex and the others?
Jin
It wasn't a mistake, was it?
Becoming the Blade of someone you trust...
Becoming the Blade of someone you trust...
Nia
Jin...
Jin
I did that too, once...
Rex starts to get up.
Jin
Rex... You have to stop Malos.
He's still searching for his own identity...
Tell him the answer you found...
He's still searching for his own identity...
Tell him the answer you found...
Rex
Jin...
Jin turns away and advances on Amalthus.
Amalthus
You should have died with Torna!
Jin
Let's end this now.
Jin's ice power begins to focus.
Jin
Our duty has been handed down.
Amalthus!
Amalthus!
Amalthus
Your duty?[9]
Your duty is as dust in the wind compared to my destiny!
Your duty is as dust in the wind compared to my destiny!
Amalthus charges and fires an angry purple beam. Jin blocks it with his ice powers, then starts to generate several dangerous-looking icicles in the air and shoot them at Amalthus. He gets stabbed a bunch and reacts accordingly. The attack becomes a barrage of constant spears. One hits him right in the chest.
Jin lets out a pained yell as he continues to force his icy wind upon Amalthus.
Amalthus
O Architect!
I should have been your chosen one...
I lived as you wanted me to!
I should have been your chosen one...
I lived as you wanted me to!
The crystal in Jin's forehead cracks.
Amalthus
I did-! I always-!!!
Zeke
...[10]
A flashback plays, of Zeke and Amalthus in Indol. It's hard to say whether it's the same time as the previous such flashback or not.
Amalthus
Bandits?
Zeke
Probably. After all, Pandoria looks pretty damn human for a Blade.
She'd be worth a lot to some people.
They sell 'em. Line up the cores with pretty pictures of the Blade inside.
She'd be worth a lot to some people.
They sell 'em. Line up the cores with pretty pictures of the Blade inside.
Amalthus
It's the same as it ever was...
Zeke
What?
Amalthus
As soon as people are denied something they desire, they try to take it by force.
Zeke
...Not everyone's like that.
Amalthus
Oh, some give up prematurely, but the feeling is there, I assure you.
Zeke
Well in that case, why bother protecting them?
Why not let people do whatever?
Why not let people do whatever?
Amalthus
To remind myself.
I must never forget what kind of beings humans are.
I must never forget what kind of beings humans are.
Zeke
Is that what helping me was, too?
Amalthus goes "Hm...". He compares the events in his mind of Pandoria carrying Zeke, with his mother carrying him.
Amalthus
A long time ago...
I seemed to recall seeing a very similar scene...
I seemed to recall seeing a very similar scene...
Zeke makes an inquisitive sound.
Amalthus
Perhaps...
That too was one face of humanity...
That too was one face of humanity...
The flashback ends.
Zeke
Why did you look so sad back then?
Amalthus is now mostly covered in ice.
Zeke
That was...you too, wasn't it...?
Amalthus lifts a hand towards the distant, recessed ceiling.
Amalthus
Father...
Why do you not answer when I call...
Why do you not answer when I call...
He sees a golden light descending from above.
Amalthus
Mother, I've...missed you...
He sees a hand coming down to touch his face. There is a flash, and he vanishes, blockage and all. Jin stands there in triumph.
Mythra
Jin...
Jin starts to glow from the bottom up. He falls to his knees as it accelerates, and once it covers him, he vanishes peacefully.
Gramps
What a splendid soul you were, Jin...
Rex
Jin...
A flashback plays. It's a rainy night in Mor Ardain. Jin is slumped in an alley under his cloak. There's a sound like a bottle got kicked into a cat as Malos arrives.
Malos
Urgh... What a stench.
They let beggars roam free in this town?
They let beggars roam free in this town?
He stops in front of Jin.
Malos
You... You're a Blade, aren't you?
Where is your Driver?
Dead drunk in a ditch...? ...No, somehow I don't think that's it.
Where is your Driver?
Dead drunk in a ditch...? ...No, somehow I don't think that's it.
Malos glares down. Jin looks up cautiously. Malos thinks about it.
Malos
The name's Malos.
He smiles.
Malos
I'm the same as you...
Jin takes his time thinking about it. Then, very slowly, he raises his hand.
