Kahran Ramsus (カーラン・ラムサス, Carlin Ramsus) or Kahr is a major antagonist in Xenogears. He is the highest ranking member of the Solaris unit Gebler, often accompanied by Miang Hawwa.
Appearance and Personality[edit]
Ramsus is a man with white hair with fringes on each side and amber eyes. He wears a purple and white collared trench coat, with a green gem on the chest, white pants, and grey boots.
Ramsus is a calm, aloof, proud, and professional soldier. However, he also suffers from a severe inferiority complex that often explodes into violence. Due to the circumstances surrounding his birth/existence and military defeats he has suffered in the past, he views Fei as his primary rival.
Story arc[edit]
History[edit]
Ramsus was originally created by Krelian as 0808191 Ramses, an experiment to clone Emperor Cain and exist as an artificial contact. For 10 years he was kept in a research facility. 14 years before the event of the game, Miang took over the body of Fei's mother, Karen, and discovered that her son was The Contact. Telling this to Krelian, she encouraged him to abandon the project and Ramses was thrown in the trash. Still just a fetus, Ramses found the second class citizen Kahran Becker, killed him and fused with his body, taking on his appearance and his identity, as well as the name Ramsus. He entered Jugend where he would meet a fellow student who would soon become the current incarnation of Miang. The two would enter a romantic relationship with each other. He also met Hyuga (Citan) and Sigurd around this time. A year later he met Jessie and started recruiting people into the Elements. Due to his elevated abilities, Ramsus quickly rose through the ranks of Gebler, eventually becoming its chief commander. Given his background, he desired to promote people based on ability rather than their rank within Solaris.
Eventually Sigurd would abandon Solaris and head to the surface, upsetting Ramsus greatly. Over the years Jessie and eventually Hyuga would depart from his side as well. This caused Ramsus to lose trust for others and he became an even more fierce individual. Six years before the events of the game, he went to the surface to help quell the rebelling country of Elru. Id was also present in the battle and would defeat Ramsus, greatly wounding him. From this moment on Ramsus would have nightmares of the event and hoped to one day defeat him. Ramsus would become a sponsor for Dominia, the sole Elru survivor of the conflict and had her enter Jugend, where she eventually become one of the Elements. He would also help out and promote Kelvena, Tolone and Seraphita who became the other three modern day Elements. As such all four of them have a great deal of admiration for him.
As the game begins, Ramsus holds the rank of Guardian Angel and remains as the highest ranking officer within Gebler.
Xenogears[edit]
Ramsus heads to the surface along with Miang to visit Shakhan in Bledavik and personally take over for former commander Vanderkaum, who has disappointed Ramsus with his performance. Ramsus meets Margie along with Miang, hoping to obtain the Fatima Jasper from her. When Bart infiltrates Fatima Castle to rescue Margie, he runs into Ramsus and Miang and fights them. Fei later joins in on the battle and Ramsus immediately recognizes his fighting technique as being just like Id's Thus begins a great obsession that Ramsus has with defeating Fei. Ramsus starts to pursue Bart and Fei, but stops when he is contacted by Citan.
When Bart and his allies attempt to take over Aveh, Ramsus smartly identifies their strategy and defeats the Nisan rebel army. He then heads to a battle at the Kislev border where Id appears. Ramsus heads out to fight him in his personal Gear, Wyvern, but Id completely trashes his Gear in mere seconds, forcing a retreat. Later, finding out that Fei is in the Aquvy area, Ramsus abandons his main mission of searching for Anima Relics and personally goes after Fei, this time piloting the underwater Gear Haishao. While he is defeated in the battle, he takes out all his aggression on the Weltall as he retreats, injuring Fei greatly.
When the party ascends Babel Tower, Ramsus appears to take them on again in the Wyvern, but fails. Having now lost to Fei/Id three times, Ramsus is lambasted by the Gazel Ministry, who call him trash. Ramsus sends the Elements after the party in an attempt to stop them from destroying the Gates hiding Solaris, but this too results in failure. Within Solaris, Ramsus confronts Citan and Jessie as they destroy the Solaris gate, calling them traitors. He then heads out in his Gear Wyvern to prevent Id from attacking Solaris, but fails once again.
Following this, Ramsus is provided with the Anima Relic Zebulun, which upgrades his Gear Wyvern into the Omnigear Vendetta. He immediately heads out to attack Fei and Elly, being asked by Krelian to capture Elly and return with her. Drunk with power, he promptly destroys Weltall, ignoring his orders. Weltall crashes to the forest below, although Fei and Elly survive and Weltall is fixed. Ramsus once again takes on Fei in the forest, but this time even the Vendetta is no match for Fei's upgraded Weltall-2, which promptly defeats him. When he sends the Elements to obtain one of the Anima Relics, they fail and are defeated by the party. Dominia overhears Miang conspiring with the Gazel Ministry and tries to tell Ramsus but he completely ignores her. He instead heads directly to Nisan, seeking once again to defeat Fei. Fei not being there, he tries to capture Elly instead but is stopped by her. He reveals his origins to Elly, that he was created to have the power of the Emperor but thrown in the trash because of Fei. Elly tells him that Fei isn't threatening his existence and that it is all in his head, but Ramsus refuses to listen.
The Gazel Ministry once again critiques Ramsus's existence, continuing to call him trash. Afterwards, Krelian and Miang tell Ramsus that he has the same power as Cain, but Cain's existence is preventing him from fully releasing his powers. As such, Ramsus confronts Cain and kills him. Ramsus stands before the party one final time at Merkava, this time piloting Krelian's Omnigear, Amphysvena. Dominia and the other Elements arrive and beg Ramsus not to fight, but he refuses to listen. He reveals to Fei how he was abandoned as an artificial contact and thrown in the trash because of his mother telling Krelian of his existence. He is once again defeated by the party. Confronting Krelian and Miang afterwards, they admit the truth to him. They tell him they manipulated him the entire time, using Fei to focus all his attention and anger on, with the sole purpose of having him kill Cain. Now that he has done that, they have no more use for him and Miang calls him trash. In a rage, Ramsus kills both Miang and Krelian with his sword although they both come back to life (Miang through Elly and Krelian through nanomachines).
Ramsus' last appearance is at the Snowfield Hideout at the end of the game. Still wallowing in misery and considering himself to be trash, Citan slaps him and tells him to stop pitying himself. With the Elements there as well to encourage him, Ramsus realizes that what he's been looking for has been close all along and apologizes to them.
