Ponspector

Not to be confused with Prospector, the BLADE Division in Xenoblade Chronicles X.

The Ponspectors are a group of Nopon in Future Connected. They consist of twelve surveyor Nopon scattered around the Bionis' Shoulder, every Ponspector will give a side quest and upon completing it, the Nopon will join the party as a minor party member with its own unique Battle Art and mark the location of two Ponspectors on the map. Ponspectors are divided by three colours, red for offensive, blue for defensive and yellow for support with buffs and debuffs.

The Ponspectors' slogan is "We measure! Find treasure! Ponspectors 'til we die!"

In each of the Ponspectors’ flags, there are symbols that indicate their position on the brigade. The number one is represented with a triangle (▲) and the number five is represented with a caret (^), combining each symbol gives a number, for example, "▲▲▲" means three; the number of Drydry, "^▲▲" means seven; the number of Setset, "^^" means ten; the number of Dekadeka, "^^▲▲" means twelve; the number of Tentoo.

As a gameplay mechanic

Ponspectors have a team attack called Union Strike, which acts as a replacement for the base game chain attack. This is a series of three quick-time events that increases its damage with each correct prompt. The damage varies depending on how many Ponspectors have been recruited.

In battle, Ponspectors have their own Battle Arts based on battle arts from the main game party members. Outside of battle and if the player has the option enabled, the recruited Ponspectors will follow the party in a straight line.

Story arc

The party's first encounter with the Ponspectors is with Tentoo after they set out from the Companions' Cape. Tentoo introduces himself and explains who the Ponspectors are and their job. He also says that they came to survey the area but their Chief, Wunwun, forgot to inform the rest of the group where the rendezvous point would be. The party asks Tentoo if he knows the location of the rest of the Ponspectors, but he only knows the location of two of them. Tentoo joins the team and the party sets out to find the ten lost Ponspectors while they continue on their adventure.

Once the party find every Ponspector and reunite with Wunwun, he says that some Cutpurse Igna stole a very important memo he found in the Archaeology Centre and without it, he can't do his job properly. After finding and returning the memo to Wunwun, he reveals that the true goal for the Ponspectors was to find the thing written on the memo; a trove full of Golden Shrooms, Wunwun adds that, with the treasure, he'll be able to pay off his debts. He says that the memo contains the coordinates of the trove, but unfortunately the coordinates are not precise, which is why he sent the Ponspectors to survey the Bionis' Shoulder initially. He and the rest of the Ponspectors ask for the party's help to escort them to the Nerthis Necropolis, the trove's location.

When they finally find the trove they are surprised by Prosecutor Davrum while Wunwun tries to open the trove. After defeating the monster, Wunwun opens the trove only to find that the Golden Shrooms are dry and worthless. Upset, he explains that he wanted the Golden Shrooms to sell them and save the Archaeology Centre from bankruptcy, as told by their Old Chief 3 years ago. Tentoo says that if he explained this before they could've helped since they're friends, not only subordinates. Faifa adds that Wunwun did not check the trove entirely, so she checks by herself. This time, the trove is releasing gold motes and particles, everyone agrees that they have to sell this, and Wunwun states that the Archaeology Centre is now saved. They thank the party for helping them with everything, and they give them the Nerthis Crown they found on the trove.

After that, they have a message in unison for the party:

"Golden Shroom all shrivelled up, but still found decent stash of loot! Archaeology Centre soon back up on feet again, thanks to help of friends!"

Lore

• The Ponspector team was founded at least 20 years ago by a Nopon reffered to as "Old Chief", who retired 3 years prior the events of Future Connected, with Wunwun taking his place.
• The Old Chief told Wunwun the poor financial situation the Ponspectors brigade is in.
• Once Wunwun became the leader, the Ponspectors stopped surveying and started doing charity work for Frontier Village mostly all the time due to the lack of money.
• At this time, Wunwun came up with the Ponspectors' slogan for the group to "have pride and raise morale".
• Said the time spent not surveying affected their brand recognition.
• At some point, Wunwun found a memo in the Archaeology Centre with an approximate location of a trove full of Golden Shrooms, so he decided to make the Ponspectors survey again on the Bionis' Shoulder to find the exact location of the trove and be able to bring the Archaeology Centre financial stability.
• There's a Ponspector manual that contains how to defeat certain enemies.
• Ponspectors can summon a Pterix as air support.

Trivia

• While Future Connected's main story was written by Mamoru Ohta, Masahiro Iwamoto was the one who wrote the story arc for each Ponspector and their backstory.
