Plot summary of Xenogears - Part 2

The second part of Xenogears, consisting of chapters 21 to 28, is set in Kislev and is centred around Fei's plan and attempts to escape.

Chapter 21: Kislev Capital

Sigmund, Kaiser of Kislev, is playing the organ in his chambers when he is notified of the clash at the border with Aveh and the recovery of Weltall into Kislev. Sigmund rejects the idea of attacking Aveh while their border forces are weakened. Afterwards, he meets with an unnamed group who arrives in a fishbowl-shaped airship, led by a masked woman who claims to be the representative of Grahf. Sigmund is offered a device to pass through 'the barrier', and is asked to move Fei and Weltall to Nortune's D block, the prisoner section of the Kislev capital, in exchange. Sigmund does not understand why but complies.

In a dream, Fei sees what appears to be his younger self watching a movie of him playing ball with his mother. Another younger version of himself with his hair in his face says that Fei should not be there, and the scene abruptly ends.

Fei awakens in D-block with a bomb collar around his neck and is told by the nurse where he is. A bunch of thugs, whom the nurse calls Battlers, pressure him into leaving the building to take the 'Baptism Ceremony'; he is brought to Rico, a burly man with green skin and orange hair, and taken to fight the thugs and Rico in one-on-one battles. Rico handily defeats Fei, and the latter falls unconscious again.

Fei is introduced to Hammer, a supplier, and Rue Cohen, a representative of Kislev's Battling Committee, who invites him to become a Battler — part of a recreational Gear-fighting sport. Fei refuses because he doesn't like Gears, to both Rue's and Hammer's surprise. However, Citan arrives in Nortune's D block immediately afterwards (having been transferred in as the new doctor) and successfully convinces Fei to try and get out of Nortune; Hammer says that people who win a Battling Tournament have their sentences pardoned, so he signs Fei up to become a Battler.

Meanwhile, the Gazel Ministry, a set of alien faces on a rotating mechanical sphere, speak of Fei in incredibly jargon-heavy language; they plan to destroy Nortune to get rid of him.

Chapter 22: Brave Battlers

Fei attends the first round in the Battling tournament. To his surprise, he is set to fight using Weltall. He does well until Weltall suddenly suffers a malfunction and explodes. Once again, Fei is left unconscious in the hospital bed.

That night, in the Kislev sewers, several of Rico's battling underlings (one of whom was Fei's first opponent) discuss how they tampered with Weltall, although it is clear that Rico himself would disapprove if he had known. Suddenly, the Battlers are murdered offscreen by an unknown enemy.

A day later, Fei wakes up, and it is not long before continues fighting in the tournament where he left off — his competitors for the first round (the Battlers in the sewers) had to drop out. This time, Fei is successful and advances to the next round. Over the next few days, Fei makes it to the semi-finals; the finalist must fight Rico, the current Battling Champ.

Chapter 23: Sewer Horror

Before the semi-finals, Rico tells Fei that his subordinates were the ones that tampered with Weltall, and that they were now dead, having been killed in the sewers. Rumours apparently have spread that Fei was responsible for the murders out of revenge, but other rumours say that a red-coloured monster in the sewers had done it; Fei, Citan, and Rico head into the sewers to investigate. The trio eventually come across a particularly strong red monster, Redrum, and kill it. Rico's arm is injured in the fight, but Rico refuses to let Citan treat it.

That night, Citan communicates again with his masked superior, who tells Citan of the Gazel Ministry's fear of Fei and of the upcoming purge of Nortune. Meanwhile, Elly and the Gebler Special Forces are assigned to the mission and briefed on their job to protect a ship named the Hecht, although they are not told the objective of the mission. They suspect it might be to purge Nortune, and Elly has reservations but decides to go along with the mission anyway.

Chapter 24: Battling Champ

Fei makes it through the semi-finals and decides to tune up Weltall with Citan and Hammer. While complaining that Weltall's parts don't match up to those of Rico's Gear, Wiseman appears and defeats Fei in hand-to-hand combat using Fei's own moves before claiming that Fei will never win by fighting brute strength with brute strength. After Fei asks Wiseman to explain himself, Wiseman explains how he was the one who brought Fei to Lahan Village and that he had trained with Khan Wong, Fei's father. Upon learning that Fei lost his memory, Wiseman further elaborates that Khan was from a floating country called Shevat, that Fei was taken by Grahf when he was young, and that Khan pursued Grahf after rescuing Fei. Wiseman teleports away, leaving Fei pensive (and Hammer flabbergasted).

Fei defeats Rico the next day, and Rico is gracious in defeat, announcing Fei the new Battling Champ. Meanwhile, one of the current Elements of Gebler, Dominia, announces that she is the leader of the purge mission and explains its objective to Elly. Elly is not a fan but Dominia has no patience for the land-dwellers (despite originally having been one herself).

After Fei (and Hammer) have their bomb collars taken off, they are introduced to Rico's old room — the room of the Battling Champ. Fei is told that Rico's Gear went out of control in a subsequent match and crashed into the Kaiser's box seat. The three plan to leave Nortune but determine they must get back Weltall first.

Fei is summoned by Kaiser Sigmund. While Sigmund asks Fei to join forces, Rico falls into the room out of the air ducts and, upon security being called, runs to the Kaiser's wife's room, where the door opens for him. In there, Rico has a flashback of his childhood: him being told that he is a demi-human, and his mother growing sick and dying. Rico is arrested by security, and Sigmund is confused as to how he got into the room, which should only open with his wife's DNA.

After the meeting, Hammer lets Fei know that Weltall is being held beneath the Battling Arena.

Chapter 25: Gear Dock Raid

Rico's subordinates meet with Fei and tell him that Rico is set to be publicly executed in the Battling Arena that night, and beg Fei to help him. Fei plans to get Weltall and escape via the Battling Arena, rescuing Rico along the way. When evening falls, Fei and Citan break into the Gear Dock to retrieve Weltall.

Chapter 26: Night Purge

Fei successfully finds Weltall in time to save Rico from a Rankar Dragon. Rico, to Fei's surprise, has no intention of leaving Nortune. However, their argument is interrupted by the arrival of Gebler above Nortune on their purge mission. Citan realises that they plan to bomb Nortune's nuclear reactor to cause a city-wide explosion; Fei plans to try and change their course while Citan helps with evacuating civilians. Fei fights his way through the Gebler Special Forces, and after a moment of indecision, Rico joins him midway through. After reaching Elly, Fei tries to convince her that what she's doing is wrong. Elly says that she must do so because it's her duty, making Fei lose his temper and drag her down to the ground to see the chaos of Nortune first-hand.

Fei returns to the skies to fight Dominia aboard the Hecht, a massive airship that is itself a bomb heading towards the Nortune reactor. After defeating her, Fei and Rico try to redirect the Hecht's trajectory away from the reactor. Elly joins them, having had a change of heart, and the three redirect it towards the residential district. They continue to try and change its course, but Fei and Rico need to stop due to their Gears overheating. Elly continues on her own and successfully redirects the Hecht fully away, but her Gear runs out of energy in the process and she falls with the Hecht. A winged black Gear appears above Nortune and protects Elly's Gear from the Hecht's explosion with its wings.

Chapter 27: Secret Weapon

The next day, Fei, Citan, and Elly plan their escape of Nortune. Hammer notifies them of an airship called the Goliath that they can use to escape, and the party heads to the hangar where it is being stored. On their way out, Rico joins them, having changed his mind about staying in Kislev.

Chapter 28: Escape Ignas

The party reaches the Goliath; using it, they fly out of Kislev and away over Aquvy, an island archipelago to the southwest of Ignas. Grahf encounters them in his Gear, and Fei, Elly and Rico fight him off. As Grahf reapproaches, Hammer (to his delight) shoots him out of the sky with the Goliath's guns.

Later, Bart observes the Goliath from the sea in his new ship, the Yggdrasil II. He happily shoots it down, not knowing who is inside. Fei, Elly, and Rico (with Hammer) successfully bail out; Citan guides the plane down to land on the sea, clipping the Yggdrasil in the process.

Ramsus is notified of the crash of the Goliath. Mid-deliberation, Grahf teleports into his room and notifies him that Fei was on the Goliath and is headed for Aquvy. Ramsus immediately changes plans to attack Fei. Shortly thereafter, Ramsus speaks with Miang in private; he reminds her not to interfere, while she says she's 'only trying to help' and that Fei is the very meaning of Ramsus's existence.

The Gazel Ministry mutter to one another about their displeasure with Ramsus shirking his duty to pursue Fei, and note that someone named Krelian is headed to Aquvy due to having found 'Zeboim's legacy'. Citan's masked superior, whom the Gazel call 'Cain', confirms this and notes that the legacy is a form of nanotechnology. The Gazel brush off the failed purge of Nortune and scoff at Cain's ideal of 'Annonelbe'.
