Melisse Ortus is a playable character in Xenosaga: Pied Piper. She is a subordinate of Jan Sauer and the founder of Scientia.
Appearance and personality[edit]
Melisse is a young, Caucasian woman with short brown hair and green eyes. She is regularly seen wearing her police uniform, which consists of a navy blue and white overcoat and boots with red trims, a navy blue skirt, and black tights.

Story arc[edit]
Melisse is one of Jan Sauer's subordinates in the Galaxy Federation's 1875th Secial Operations Command along with Lactis, Erich, Mikhail, and the combat support robot Bugs. She assisted him during his investigation of Voyager's serial killings. Melisse is introduced leading a rescue operation of some Goodwill Ambassadors that were kidnapped by Voyager despite not receiving orders from Jan first. She had hoped to be promoted, as Jan had been at her age. In part due to her inexperience, the operation does not go well with multiple police officers being killed. Melisse gets emotional over the event, blaming herself for the deaths of her colleagues and calling Voyager the worst enemy mankind has ever known.
Melisse gets along well with her colleagues. She and Mikhail tease each other at times. He is romantically interested in her, but she does not have mutual feelings for him, looking for someone who is more like Jan. She is quite upset by his eventual death. In an attempt to find more leads for their investigation, Melisse proposes that they get in touch with the anti-U.M.N. organization Veritas, which Jan permits. Melisse is eventually arrested along with Jan and the others, being charged for her actions during the Goodwill Ambassador rescue and her communication with Veritas.
Melisse is present for the final confrontation with Voyager and witnesses Jan's suicide. She survives the incident but leaves the Federation Police. She initially joins up with Veritas, but then founds her own anti-U.M.N. organization, known as Scientia, in T.C. 4669.

Female investigator in the 1875th Special Ops Command.
Female investigator placed in the 1875th Special Ops Command immediately after graduating from the Federation Police Academy.
A no-nonsense woman with a strong sense of justice; quick to take action. However, this meant she frequently placed the team in danger by acting on her own judgment in the name of her sense of justice.
She was arrested by the Federation Police as part of a group of suspects immediately after Voyager’s attack on the Pilgrimage Meeting in T.C. 4667. However, her culpability was questioned on the ground of her unsound mental condition, and she was later acquitted. She was subsequently sent to a treatment facility, but disappeared after he release.
Sometime between Pied Piper and T.C. 4669, she was said to be responsible for unifying various anti-U.M.N. groups from around the galaxy and forming the terrorist group known as Scientia.
Trivia[edit]
- Although Melisse is shown having worn a cravat as a part of her police uniform in Pied Piper, this detail is strangely omitted from her design in A Missing Year, being replaced with the shape of an eye made out of the red trims in her dress.
