Medena Van Houten is a character from Xenogears. She is the mother of Elly.

Appearance and personality

Medena has blonde hair and blue eyes.

Despite Elly's doubts about her parentage, Medena is a loving mother and was in despair during the time when she thought her daughter was missing.

Story arc

Medena is a first class Solaris citizen and is married to Erich Van Houten. Unlike her husband and daughter, Medena is a civilian with no military affiliation. Elly falsely believes that Medena is not her real mother, and that a land dwelling nurse that stayed in their home when she was a child was her mother. She holds this belief due to not physically resembling her parents or other first class Solaris citizens. While not confirmed within the game, it is stated in Perfect Works that Medena is her real mother.

Medena first appears in the game when Elly and Fei flee to Elly's house in Solaris. Elly lies to her mother about Fei being a member of the Special Forces and is also caught by her trying to go into her father's room. After Fei flees from Elly's house, Medena encourages her daughter to live her life the way she wishes. As the party flees from Solaris, Hammer helps free both of Elly's parents from captivity. When they are about to get away, Hammer takes Elly hostage with a gun, revealing that he has betrayed the party in favor of Krelian. Medena steps before Hammer and encourages Elly to walk away from him. In a panic, Hammer fires the gun and kills her.
