Luis Virgil (ルイス・バージル) is a supporting character in the Xenosaga series. He is also a guest party member in Xenosaga Episode I and Xenosaga I & II.
Appearance and personality[edit]
Luis Virgil is a man with short, blonde hair and cyan colored eyes. The skin on his face has cornified as a direct result of his DME addiction. In Episode I he is seen wearing a blue Galaxy Federation issued A.G.W.S. pilot uniform with orange accents, complete with pads and a helmet for shock absorption.
Virgil carries himself with crudeness and vulgarity, often using coarse language and moving with careless mannerisms. He makes an effort to show disgust at every opportunity to Realians and those who he believes display shallow support for Realian rights. Even in sentimental situations, Virgil will try to veil his feelings with volatility. Virgil reacts this way because his pessimistic ideals lead him to see the worst in humanity. On the other hand, Virgil is a highly capable soldier, caring for his subordinates and refusing to falter in the line of duty.
Story arc[edit]
History[edit]
Having enlisted in the Galaxy Federation military at the age of 18, Virgil took part in the second descent operation of the Miltian Conflict and was taken prisoner by U-TIC Organization forces. Not long before the third descent, he was rescued and nursed back to health by the Transgenic Type Realian Febronia, having received organ transplants from her. Over time, he grew an attachment to the peace he felt in her presence and they shared a romantic relationship. However, during the third descent, Febronia was killed by berserk combat Realians and Virgil was forced to escape holding onto the thought of her demise.
14 years later, Virgil is stationed as an A.G.W.S. pilot in the 117th Marine Division of the Federation military on the planet Tessedora. As part of this division, he joins them in their deployment to escort the Woglinde in the investigation of the disappearance of the planet Ariadne.
Episode I[edit]
Onboard the Woglinde, Virgil is introduced when Shion assists Caspase in the Woglinde's Realian maintenance lab. Virgil enters the room, proclaiming that he can't stand the stench of the Realians. He and Shion get in an argument about the rights of Realians. Shion supports the basic human rights of Realians, but Virgil points out that the company she works for, Vector, classifies them as merchandise and has installed an emergency override code to enable them to be controlled. After he leaves, Shion ponders his skin condition, wondering if he is a DME addict, someone addicted to the consumption of Realian tissue, and Caspase apologizes for his behavior, saying he wasn't always like this.
When the Gnosis attack the Woglinde, Virgil takes part in defending the ship against them piloting his A.G.W.S. Shion runs right into the line of fire of Virgil and his allies and is nearly killed by them. Virgil yells at her afterwards, questioning what a civilian is still doing on the ship. The Gnosis end up killing two of Virgil's subordinates, Hornst and Lester. Realizing that they can't harm the Gnosis, Virgil steals Shion's Connection Gear and uses it to control the nearby combat Realians such that they can grab onto the Gnosis and self-destruct. Shion claims this is a violation of their rights, but he points out that even Shion herself who had the ability to remove such capabilities from the Realians hasn't done so due to protocol. Virgil's gambit fails however; leaving the Gnosis without even a scratch. With the arrival of KOS-MOS, Virgil joins with her, Shion and Allen, fleeing on foot while they try to fight off the Gnosis, now made more vulnerable by KOS-MOS' activation of the Hilbert Effect. When Virgil stands in between her and some Gnosis, KOS-MOS shoots and kills him, using the logic that there would be a large drop in her offensive efficacy if she was to try and avoid him. Despite her quarrels with him, Shion is horrified by the fact that KOS-MOS has killed him. As he dies, Virgil has a vision of Febronia.
Virgil shows up far later in the game at the Song of Nephilim, now hooded and masked as the Blue Testament. He tells Albedo to stop screwing around and get the job done, and stays there to distract Jr. and the others, transforming into the Gnosis Ein Rugel and Doppelwogel. After the battle, he claims it is useless to fight any further and that the laws they are governed by are too different. Having bought enough time for Albedo, Virgil departs. Virgil's final appearance in the game occurs after the appearance of Proto Merkabah. He appears standing out in space atop his E.S., Naphtali, complaining to the Red Testament about how he doesn't take orders from him and to stop talking in his head. The Red Testament tells him he'll have to get used to it.
Episode II[edit]
Virgil, as the Blue Testament, appears at the end of the game along with the Red and Black Testaments with their E.S.s. Virgil says he'd have appreciated it if supporting actors could stick to their roles, and kills Patriarch Sergius alongsidethe other Testaments. He later appears at the end of the game with Wilhelm and the other Testaments talking about the Y-Data and welcoming the White Testament.

As the Blue Testament, he typically wears a blue hooded cape over his blue armor. He also occasionally wears his blue, bird-like Testament mask when he wishes to hide his face. Virgil can take the form an angelic Gnosis. He can also projects a demonic figure to aid him in battle.
Like the other Testaments, Virgil is motivated by ulterior goals rather than Wilhelm's orders. Despite this, his goals align with Wilhelm's, allowing him to be devoted to the orders he's given. Virgil seeks Eternal Recurrence to reconcile the loss of Febronia during the Miltian Conflict.
Lore[edit]
- Virgil believes the Miltian Charter is a "load of crap".
- Even after becoming a Testament, Virgil maintains his cornified skin throughout Episode II and Episode III. Due to the metaphysical nature of Testaments, this would mean Virgil is intentionally projecting this image of himself with cornified skin when he could just as easily project an image of himself with clear skin.

Episode I
1st Lieutenant Virgil
BORN: T.C. 4735
AGE: 32 years old
A first lieutenant of the Galaxy Federation Marine Corps and a brilliant A.G.W.S. pilot.
He is afflicted with DME addiction (which is caused by the consumption of Realian body tissue), as evidenced by the condition of his facial skin.
1st Lieutenant Virgil (2)
How the man who was shot to death by KOS-MOS manages to show up in front of Shion, is unclear. What is clear, however, is that something had happened to him and he now has superhuman powers.
The fact that he was taking orders from Wilhelm's advisor indicates that he has some kind of connection with Wilhelm.
Episode III
Luis Virgil
Former lieutenant in the Galaxy Federation Navy. Following the disappearance of planet Ariadne, he was a member of the investigative force aboard the cruiser Woglinde.
He was a top-class A.W.G.S. pilot. He was fatally show by KOS-MOS during the Gnosis attack on the Woglinde. A vicious-looking man, the skin all over his body was cracked and splintered as a result of DME addiction.
He showed a prejudicial and cruel attitude towards Realians which bordered on outright enmity. While it is unknown exactly what brought on this hatred for Realians, it seems to be the result of an event which took place 15 years ago when he was a soldier during the second and third Miltian descent operations.
It is thought that he shared some contact at that time with Febronia--the Realian who sent Shion a message in the encephalon.
He later appeared as a Testament, a member of Wilhelm's vanguard force. His attempts to contact Shion even after he became a Testament appeared to be motivated more by his own past than the result of Wilhelm's orders.
