Lactis is a playable character in Xenosaga: Pied Piper. He is a subordinate of Jan Sauer.

Story arc

Pied Piper

Lactis is one of Jan Sauer's subordinates along with Melisse, Erich, Mikhail and the combat support robot Bugs. He assisted him during his investigation of Voyager's serial killings. Lactis is close with his colleagues and dedicated to seeing the mission through to the end.

Unknown to Lactis, he contains a program called "Canaan" which is responsible for searching for humans that have a particular factor within them. This fact is known to Wilhelm who discusses it with his subordinate Kayla. Lactis is unaware of this program, including when chaos speaks to him, telling him that he must protect "Canaan" with all his strength.

When the investigation into Voyager is shut down, Lactis is not arrested as his colleagues are. This enables him to activate Bugs and they help Jan and the others escape. Lactis is present for the final confrontation with Voyager and witnesses Jan's suicide. He survives the incident and is recalled to Vector Industries afterwards, with the public explanation being that he had a "defect" in his central nervous system.

Episode III

When Voyager confronts the party at the Archon Cathedral, he reveals that Canaan is in fact, Lactis and that he was observing the entire party to search those who have the potential of becoming a Testament. Ultimately, Canaan sacrifices himself to destroy himself and Voyager out of regret of being used to spy on the party, thus bringing an end to Lactis's existence.

Lactis

Early-era Realian posted to the Federation Police.

Early-era Realian posted as a test model to the Federation Police 1875th Special Ops Command.

Built to look like a human youth. He specialized in collecting and analyzing data for the U.M.N.; his responsibilities as a special forces member focused on these strengths.

Furthermore, Lactis was one of the early-era Realians that had been installed with Program Canaan. Although the true purpose of Program Canaan is unknown, it appears to have been a system thought up by Wilhelm as a way to detect people with a special “trait” which would allow them to become a Testament.

As a result of Project Canaan’s top secret development within Vector, even its development process is unknown; absolutely no materials remain concerning it.

Because the Program is built into the base system within the brain stem in the construction phase, even the Realian in question is unaware of its presence.

It can be deduced that Lactis himself was unaware of the fact that he carried Program Canaan within his body.
