Hilbert Effect

KOS-MOS activating the Hilbert Effect.

The Hilbert Effect is an ability in the Xenosaga series. It is an anti-Gnosis field generation system that allows Gnosis to be vulnerable to attacks.

Description[edit]

The Hilbert Effect typically appears as a blue shock wave that expands outward from the user. It draws Gnosis and other beings from Imaginary Space into Real Space so they can become vulnerable to conventional weapons. It can be also used to disable many high-end sensors using cross-interference. KOS-MOS, MOMO Mizrahi, the 100-Series Observational Realians, and the Kirschwassers are equipped with the Hilbert Effect. KOS-MOS's Hilbert Effect generator is unique that it can reach at least 300,000 kilometers, but when using all her power, that field can expand to several hundred astronomical units.

Story[edit]

History[edit]

The Hilbert Effect was invented by Joachim Mizrahi at the Cerebral Sciences Research Center on Miltia sometime before T.C. 4753. Most likely posed as a more efficient method at destroying Gnosis, it was most prominently implemented in 100-Series Realians. Presumably as a result of the Hilbert Effect's inaccessibility, its predecessor in anti-Gnosis technology, the D.S.S.S., continued to be standard use over the next 14 years.

Episode I[edit]

In the KOS-MOS Simulator, Shion attempted to test the Hilbert Effect on a Gnosis-type drone, but the simulation malfunction upon activation, prompting Allen to remove her from the simulation. During the Gnosis raid on the Woglinde, KOS-MOS used the Hilbert Effect to draw all the surrounding Gnosis in the physical realm and make them vulnerable to conventional weaponry. At Pleroma, MOMO used her Hilbert Effect to disable some U-TIC A.G.W.S.'s sensors, allowing Ziggy and MOMO to defeat them with ease. After the Elsa was pulled from Hyperspace by the Cathedral Ship, KOS-MOS activated her Ultra-Wide Range Hilbert Effect before the ship is pulled in by the Cathedral Ship. When the Gnosis attacks the Kukai Foundation due to the prescence of the Song of Nephilim, KOS-MOS once again uses the Hilbert Effect to draw the Gnosis into physical realm to buy time for the evacuation.

Episode II[edit]

The Hilbert plays a relatively minor role during whenever KOS-MOS engages in battle with Gnosis-type enemies.

In other words, yes we know it's unfinished; we just didn't want to leave it blank in the meantime. You can help complete it.

As a Gameplay mechanic[edit]

The Hilbert Effect is an ability that KOS-MOS and MOMO can use. It decreases all abilities of mechanical and Gnosis enemies.

Episode I

Hilbert Effect

A device which generates a finitely bound realm (a "sensory" realm, to be exact), to enable an intersection with the imaginary realm.

There are specific wave energies that exist in both the realms of real numbers and imaginary numbers. This device "interprets" such wave energies into a "common language," thereby allowing the physical realm to interact with the imaginary realm (the realm of Planck scales).

What this means, then, is that the Gnosis, which exist outside our physical laws, can effectively be dealt with using a physical, real-world approach.

Ultra Wide-Range Hilbert

The deployment of the Hilbert Effect over an extremely large area.

Ordinarily, the range of KOS-MOS' Hilbert Effect is set to cover a radius of about 300,000km. However, when Shion witnessed the impending massive swarm of Gnosis, she decided to enlarge the effective range to a radius of several hundred AU (astronomical units).

Episode III

Hilbert Effect

Hilbert Effect Database Thumbnail XS3.jpg

A limited perception field generation system for interacting with Gnosis.

A limited perception field generation system developed as a method of reaching out from real space to interact with the Gnosis, which exist in imaginary space.

It makes interaction by real-world humans possible by translating imaginary-space pulsations into a "common language" and intentionally expanding the accessible area of imaginary space (normally Planck-scale sized). This also allows the use of everyday weapons against Gnosis, who ignore the laws of physics.

Usually, KOS-MOS can create a field of about 300,000 kilometers, but when using all her power, that field can expand to several million astronomical units. MOMO and 100-Series Observational Units can create a field with a range up to 100 kilometers using a special large-scale amplifier; without this device, however, they are limited to only a few hundred meters.

Ultra-Wide Range Hilbert

Ultra-Wide Range Hilbert Database Thumbnail XS3.jpg

Deploying the Hilbert Effect over an extremely wide range.

KOS-MOS has an effective radius of about 300,000 kilometers within which she can use the Hilbert Effect. She can also deploy it over a super-wide area, should the situation call for it.

Normally, even when using a system with an amplifier, the area maxes out at only a 100 kilometer radius; KOS-MOS, however, can far surpass that limit, unleashing the Hilbert Effect over a radius of several hundred astronomical units.

Xenosaga I & II

Hilbert Effect

A limited perceptual field generation system developed as a means of interfering with the Gnosis that exist in the Imaginary Number Domain, via the plane of real phenomena.
By translating the waves of the Imaginary Number Domain into the "common language", the range of potential interference with the Imaginary Number Domain, shrunk to Planck scale, was intentionally expanded to allow interference by humans in the Real Number realm.
This has made conventional weapons effective against the Gnosis, who defy the laws of physics.

Hilbert Effect Part 2

Normally, the deployment radius from KOS-MOS is about 300,000km, but at maximum output, its radius can be extended to several hundred astronomical units.
M.O.M.O and mass-produced 100-Series Observational Units can expand their range up to 100km by using special large-scale amplifiers, but their maximum deployment range is limited to a few hundred meters when the system is operated on its own.

Ultra-Wide Range Hilbert

The deployment of the Hilbert Effect across an ultra-wide range.
KOS-MOS has a base Hilbert Effect deployment radius of approximately 300,000km, but in truth, it is possible for her Hilbert Effect to be deployed across an ultra-wide range depending on the situation.
The limit of the standard system equipped with an amplifier is approximately 100km in circumference, but in KOS-MOS's case, this limit is far wider, allowing for a Hilbert deployment with a radius of several hundred astronomical units.

Trivia[edit]

  • The Hilbert Effect is likely named after David Hilbert, a highly influential mathematician in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The exact relation between Hilbert and the eponymous effect is unclear.
