The Higher Dimension — referred to by other names such as the Upper Domain,[note 1] the Higher Plane, or a High Order Domain — is a plane of existence that encompasses the entire Xenosaga universe. It is the plane of existence where U-DO resides.

Descripton[edit]

Similar to the Lower Dimension, the Higher Dimension is also composed of a dual layer structure (The Lower Dimension is composed of Real Space and Imaginary Space, two unique temporal axes). However, the exact nature of this structure is unknown. It is also unknown if the Higher Dimension even has a concept of the passage of time.

The Higher Dimension's relationship with the Lower Dimensions it exists alongside is hierarchical in nature. On a grand scale, the Higher Dimension is a constant in the universe of Xenosaga. The Higher Dimension and the Lower Dimensions exist in tandem, and the destruction of one will always effect the other.[1] Beings that exist within the Higher Dimension such as U-DO are capable of observing the Lower Dimensions that accompany them. U-DO in particular observes the Lower Dimension in which the Xenosaga series takes place. While beings within the Lower Dimension can mutually observe U-DO, it is impossible for them to observe the Higher Dimension itself. Lower Dimension access to U-DO creates a massive influx of energy from the Higher Dimension. This energy is most evident in events surrounding the Zohar. However, that is not to say that the Zohar is the only means by which the Lower Dimension can draw out this energy. Certain humans such as Shion and Aoi Uzuki have a genetic condition that allows them direct access to U-DO.[2]

Aside from U-DO, a multitude of other beings and Lower Dimensions exist in the Higher Dimension beyond the perception of Xenosaga's Lower Dimension. Because of this limited perception, other Lower Dimensions that exist beyond it are completely unknown, and their realities may abide by entirely different structures and laws. It is unspecified whether or not the other beings in the Higher Dimension are wave-type existences like U-DO is.

Trivia[edit]

  • The Xenoblade Chronicles series' Rift bears similarities to the Higher Dimension in that it is also a thread that connects a multitude of dimensional universes.
