Hero
- This article is about the mechanic in Xenoblade Chronicles 3. For the chapter in Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition, see Chapter 13 (Act 3).
Heroes are non-playable party members in Xenoblade Chronicles 3. By either progressing the main story or completing quests, these characters can be recruited by the party and used as a seventh party member. Outside of the Archsage's Gauntlet, only one Hero may participate in battle at a time. Each Hero has a unique Class, which can be unlocked for use by the main party.
While recruiting Heroes is mostly optional, some Hero Quests are part of the main story, thus making those heroes mandatory.
Gameplay[edit]
Up to one Hero can be in the party at once under normal circumstances. Unlike the main party members, they cannot be player-controlled (except for choosing their Arts during Chain Attacks) and cannot Interlink. Each Hero has five regular Battle Arts which function the same as Class Arts, plus a Talent Art. These Arts are technically different to the Arts used by the main party members of the Hero's Class, although each often has a close main-party equivalent. Often, the hitframes of the Art will be different when used by the Hero; they may also have further differences, including but not limited to in cooldown, function, or even in name. On the other hand, a Class's skills will often be the same for the Hero and for main party members; there are a small number of exceptions, where one of a Class's skills will be restricted to the Hero and a different skill will be available to party members.
Heroes have their own progression through Class ranks which is not based upon the CP that main party members obtain. Rather, they start at rank 10, and jump to rank 20 once their "ascension condition" is met, typically by completing their Ascension Quest.
In Chain Attacks, Heroes have special properties. Rather than the usual role effects of First Blood/Back in Action/Point Limit, they have "Heroic Chains": effects unique to that Hero when they are chosen to use a Battle Art. In addition, when their Chain Order is chosen, the Chain Attack gauge does not decrease, meaning that they essentially grant a free extra round when chosen.
Heroes' accessories are fixed and cannot be changed until after the main story is completed. Their gems are also fixed, with rank increasing as the Hero increases in level.
In the Archsage's Gauntlet, the role of Heroes is substantially different: up to six can join the party rather than only one, although they still cannot be player-controlled outside of Chain Attacks. They also have access to all five of their regular Battle Arts, although only the three "equipped" ones will be available in Chain Attacks. Finally, Heroes deplete the Chain Attack gauge as do main party members in this mode.
Some discussions and quests, particularly Hero Quests and Ascension Quests, require a specific Hero to be in the party.

Trivia[edit]
- Heroes have different voicelines when being chosen on the Hero selection menu once reaching the final point of the main story.
- While certain Heroes like Monica and Ghondor become temporarily unselectable during certain parts of the main story, Ethel is the only Hero who remains unselectable until meeting her ascension condition and it is entirely optional.
- Ethel and Cammuravi are the only two non-DLC Heroes that don't have ascension quests, as well as the only two that share the same ascension condition.
- Both are also the only Heroes to be killed by Moebius in the main story.
- Ethel is the only Hero where her ascension condition requires another Hero in the party to complete.
- Ghondor is the only Hero that neither needs a Hero Quest completed nor going to a certain location to acquire. Miyabi has a similar condition in that she is gained from somebody else's Side Story.
- DLC Heroes will not be summoned by Melia and Nia during the second phase of the final boss X∞ and Y∞.
- Riku & Manana, Nia, and Melia are the only non-DLC Heroes that can never be fought by the party, which includes DLC challenge battle.
- Similarly, Monica and Fiona can only be fought in the DLC Challenge Battle, Heroes Frontline.
- All non-DLC Heroes with the exception of Triton appear as part of the ending cutscene, regardless of whether they have been recruited (or in Ethel's case re-recruited). This is due to the scene being pre-rendered.
- Shulk and Rex are the only Heroes to not have a class inheritor, as both classes are unusable by the main party.
