Hermann (ヘルマン) is an antagonist character in the Xenosaga series. He is a member of Ormus.

Appearance and personality

Despite his appearance being hidden in all of the mainline Xenosaga games, his face is shown in the Nintendo DS game, Xenosaga I & II. He is a young man with dark brown hair, blue eyes, and a chinstrap beard. He is only shown wearing a large, green suit of metallic armor topped with a spangenhelm. His attire prioritizes protection, even going as far as having his hands fully armored, as seen in one of his sprites.

Hermann has a quiet and stoic demeanor when in the presence of his superiors. When compared to Richard, it's clear that he's the more cautious person between the two of them, often urging Richard to stay calm in the face of worthy opponents, although to no avail.

Story arc

Hermann is an Inquisitor in Ormus and is under the command of Chief Inquisitor Margulis. He is skilled with the use of a cudgel. He was previously a member of the Galaxy Federation Navy, holding the position of private first-class, and was in the same detachment as Matthews. After the unit was disbanded, he became the CEO of Hayes Porter Services, a dummy corporation for the U-TIC Organization. His family had been retainers for Richard's family going back to when they were part of the Immigrant Fleet. As such he has pledged loyalty to Richard throughout his life.

Episode II

When the party arrives at Second Miltia, Margulis arranges for Pellegri to try and capture MOMO. She is accompanied by her subordinates, Richard and Hermann and sends them ahead. Richard and Hermann chase after the car carrying MOMO in their A.M.W.S. units, Pilum and Scutum. They chase MOMO and the others as they run through the city and eventually do battle. Pellegri arrives after the party defeats them and tells Richard and Hermann to stand down, but she is forced to retreat with them when Canaan appears in Asher. Richard and Herman appear again later in the game at the Ormus Stronghold and the party must fight them off again.

Xenosaga I & II

In the Episode I segment, Hermann is introduced in a meeting with Margulis, Pellegri, and Richard. He and Richard first meet the main party when they infiltrate the Durandal disguised as Galaxy Federation soldiers. Before they fight, Hermann notes that he recognizes the Elsa, questioning if it belongs to Matthews. After the fight, the two are defeated and retreat.

In the Episode II segment, Hermann and Richard are given orders from Margulis to intercept the party on Second Miltia, this time using their P.S. units. Rather than chasing the party, they're held off by Shion and KOS-MOS while the party retrieves E.S. Asher. Using P.S. Gad and P.S. Joseph, Richard and Hermann manage to cripple KOS-MOS, but are distracted long enough to get defeated when the party comes back with not only the Asher, but also E.S. Zebulun. Later on, Hermann and Richard still appear in the Ormus Stronghold, but unlike their initial appearance in Episode II, they're seen fighting against Albedo. The two are defeated by him, and retreat before the party walks in with their E.S. units. After Albedo sets the destruction of the stronghold in motion, Hermann and Richard return to fight the party. After losing once again, they retreat, but are caught in the stronghold's explosion, propelling them towards Old Miltia along with the main party and Albedo. On Old Miltia, they encounter the Black Testament who distracts them from reaching the Original Zohar before the main party. After the awakening of the Ω System, Hermann and Richard are ordered by Pellegri to pull back and prepare for what's to come.

Episode III

Along with Richard, Hermann is put in charge of dealing with a Federation Fleet that moves towards Rennes-le-Château after it appears in space. He appears along with Richard on Michtam near the end of the game and attacks the party in his E.S., Joseph. He is defeated and killed as part of the battle.

Formerly a private first-class in the Galaxy Federation Navy and stationed in Sergeant Matthews’s detachment. After the unit was disbanded, he took the role of CEO of a U-TIC Organization dummy corporation, Hayes Porter Services.

Hermann’s family has been in the service of Richard’s household since they were both aboard the Immigrant Fleet. Consequently, Hermann has pledged loyalty to Richard since he was born.
