Hammer is a supporting character in Xenogears. He is a prisoner from the D Block of Nortune, Kislev. After being freed, he stays with the main group for the majority of the game.

Appearance and Personality

Hammer's appearance resembles a humanoid version of a rat. He wears a green uniform, along with hat and spectacles. During his time as a prisoner in D Block he also wears an explosive collar around his neck.

From the moment he meets Fei, Hammer displays a level of eagerness and excitement to befriend and work with him. Hammer seems to often have various schemes going on in order to get his information and may have a variety of other relationships and pursuits that the game never has the time to get into. Hammer can at times come off as a bit secretive in terms of where he gets his information, although he is quick to request information of Fei and Citan when he realizes he isn't in the loop on something. Hammer often can be found gloating, such as when he successfully hits the Alpha Weltall while on the Goliath.

Story arc

Hammer is imprisoned in D-Block of Nortune for a crime that is never explained in-game. He is known among those in D-Block as "Hammer the Supplier" and beyond being able to supply goods also acts as a Gear mechanic and a source of information. Fei initially comes across Hammer at Latina's Bar. Seeing how powerful Fei is, Hammer quickly attempts to befriend him and is a consistent companion of Fei's throughout his time in D-Block. This includes helping Fei with repairs for Weltall, encouraging him to join the Battle Tournament, and finding out information about the train schedule when they make their escape from Nortune.

When Fei wins the Battle Tournament, Hammer is also cleared of his crimes and let go. He continues to spend time with Fei and Citan and departs the city along with them after Gebler's attack. Hammer is able to make his way into the Goliath Factory before Fei and the others and assist in clearing the way through. After the Goliath takes off he helps in defending against Grahf including successfully getting a shot on Alpha Weltall using the Goliath's cannon.

Upon reaching the Yggdrasil, Hammer remains aboard the craft in his original role of supplier. When Fei and the others go to Solaris, Hammer tags along and assists in the escape of Elly's parents when they depart. Just before making it out of Solaris however, Hammer pulls out a gun, having manipulated by Krelian and attempts to seize Elly and take her back with him. Elly's mother Medena steps in the way and panicking, Hammer pulls the trigger and kills her. This causes Hammer to flee, although he separately makes it out of Solaris before its destruction.

Hammer later reappears at Anima Dungeon 2, revealing that Krelian fused him into a Wel-Gear. He intercepts the party just as Rico receives his Omnigear, El-Stier, attempting to capture both the Omnigear and Elly. Confident in the power received from his Wel-Gear, he engages the party, but despite upgrading into different forms, he is defeated. Before dying, he reveals to Rico that he's the next in line to be Kaiser of Nortune, as well as feeling remorse for his action before dropping into the abyss.

Post-Solaris appearance and personality

After turning on the party in Solaris, Hammer is surgically fused with a Wel-Gear by Krelian; nothing organic remains other than his eye.

Hammer is jealous towards others due to his insecurities and is weak minded, easily swayed by Krelian into attempting to abduct Elly in exchange for power. After being transformed by Krelian, he is driven insane by the power received from his Wel-Gear, and is confident that he is able to overpower the party. This fails and he is defeated, although after being defeated, he feels remorse for his actions and notifies Rico of his royal lineage before dying.
