Grahf is one of the main antagonists in Xenogears. He is a man with a terrifying visage, often bestowing his power to many Solarian allies at the cost of their sanity.

Appearance and Personality[edit]

Existing through possessing the body of others, Grahf's appearance constantly changes although he covers it up through the wearing of a skull-like helmet and costume which covers up his entire body.

Grahf wields great power and desires to destroy the world and kill God. He repeatedly appears before the party as a significant barrier, although has ulterior motives and doesn't actually seek their death. He looks down on or ignores most of those around him, appearing to only have an on the level relationship with Miang and Krelian.

Story arc[edit]

History[edit]

Grahf is an entity created due to Lacan's imperfect contact with the Zohar. Lacan was devastated by Sophia's sacrifice. He secretly met with Miang in Shevat's prison and she was able to take advantage of his despair. Lacan desired great power and she convinced him he would be able to attain such power by finding the Zohar. Lacan was able to set Miang free and they pursued and eventually found Zohar. Because spiritually Lacan was incomplete and that era's Elly was no longer alive, he was unable to have a proper contact with the Zohar and instead became the entity known as Grahf. Seeking the destruction of the world, Grahf awoke the Diabolos, the first stage mobile terminal weapons of Deus. They destroyed the surface of the Earth, killing 90% of the population in what is known as the Days of Collapse. After this Grahf went into hiding. His physical body would die 9 years later, however as Lacan's will, Grahf remained in existence, having the ability to possess the bodies of others.

Grahf donned a mask and costume that enabled him to hide his identity as he hopped from body to body over the course of nearly 500 years. 14 years prior to the events of the game Grahf was informed by Miang, who inhabited the body of Karen that her son Fei was the contact, the perfect reincarnation of his original physical body. However Fei's abilities went out of control, resulting in the death of his mother. Grahf took possession of Fei for many years, encouraging the destructive behavior of his Id personality. Fei's father Khan pursued them and on a night 3 years before the start of the game there was a battle involving the 3 of them. Khan was able to kill Grahf's current body and turn Fei back to his original self, although he was greatly injured in the attempt. Grahf took possession of Khan's body, but due to Khan's strong will, he was not able to have control of his body 100% of the time. Khan, hiding his identity, brought Fei's body to Lahan Village. At various points in time Khan's will overrides that of Grahf's, enabling him to appears as Wiseman.

Grahf pilots the Omnigear Alpha Weltall, which aligned with the Anima Relic Naphtali 500 years ago. Grahf influenced the development of Fei's Gear Weltall, with it being based on his Omnigear.

Xenogears[edit]

In the present day Grahf continues to pursue Fei and his Id persona. While he loosely works with Solaris, he is a wild card and only really listens to Miang and Krelian. Grahf takes advantage of a Gebler operation where Weltall is stolen from Kislev and lands by Lahan Village. During the resulting skirmish, he encourages the forces there to kill Fei's friend Timothy, which draws out Fei's Id persona and results in the destruction of the entire village. Grahf then appears before Fei in the desert of Aveh. He tells Fei that their goal is to kill the mother god and that his father is dead. Grahf departs, but tests Fei out through the attack of a Wyrm. Grahf later appears at Fatima Castle, revealing his present day relationship with Miang.

When Fei assists Bart in his attempt to retake Aveh as part of a skirmish at the Aveh - Kislev border, Grahf appears once again before Fei and Vanderkaum, a Gebler commander using the Gear Dora. Proclaiming that he has "the power", Grahf emits power to the Dora which provides it far greater strength, although it is eventually destroyed by Fei in his Id persona. Grahf provides "the power" to two other individuals later in the game, Bishop Stone and Shakhan. His goal is to provide a tougher opponent for Fei so as to further encourage the emergence of his Id personality.

Grahf next appears in Nortune when during the attack launched by Gebler, he rescues Elly and her Gear from destruction, why he did this unknown. When the party later steals the giant battleship Goliath from Kislev, Grahf appears before them with his Gear to try and stop them. During this battle he refrains from attacking Elly and it appears that he still has an admiration for her going back to the days when he was Lacan and in love with her prior incarnation, Sophia. Grahf is temporarily defeated although the Goliath is soon shot out of the sky by Bart.

Grahf is contacted by Miang as the party heads to the Zeboim Ruins in the Ethos Dig Site, however Khan's will causes Wiseman to appear there instead. When the party heads to Solaris he appears during their departure along with Miang (dressed as The Executioner) to try and prevent their escape. Shortly afterwards Fei and Elly are defeated by Ramsus and his omnigear Vendetta and they crash to the woods below. Grahf, needing Fei to live, arranges for them to be rescued and treated by Taura.

When Mahanon is activated, Grahf accompanies the Solaris forces there and easily defeats the party with his Gear. Grahf feels that the time has finally come for him to take Fei's body but at Krelian's request he refrains such that Fei can be used as bait for Elly. When Elly is subsequently captured as a result, he taunts Fei and declines the chance to seize his body. Grahf is encountered one final time at Bethlehem, the land where the Zohar is located. He allows Khan's will to take over his body in order to trick Fei. After Fei addresses his issues with Id and has a perfect contact with the Wave Existence Grahf reveals himself, hoping to finally seize Fei's body. However by this point Fei and his Gear Xenogears have become more powerful than Grahf and he is defeated. Fei is paralyzed by the Zohar after the fight but Grahf sacrifices himself to buy him more time.
