Gear
Gears (ギア, Gears) are a type of battle suit that make their appearance in Xenogears. They are piloted similarly to a vehicle but have human-like proportions, much similar to other types of robot mecha.
Appearance and properties[edit]
Gears take on a wide variety of appearances due to their varied nature. A constant in their designs, however, is that they are made from a type of metal alloy that gives them a clean, stainless look. Another common factor is their hulking stature, most Gears stand taller than buildings and even sometimes entire cities. Most are bipedal and humanoid (with exceptions like Haishao and other animal-like Gears, or vehicle-like Gears often found as generic enemies). Almost every Gear has a cockpit, similar to aircraft in the real world (with the exception of human-Gear fusions like Seibzehn).
Gears are used for a number of reasons, however most Gears seen within Xenogears are used for combat. As such, they are often equipped with guns, whips, swords, and many other varieties of weapon. They also operate on a fuel system, which means they can run out of ammo and energy (thus rendering a Gear that isn't properly equipped useless).
Omnigears[edit]
- Main article: Omnigear
Omnigears are a special type of Gear that has been aligned with an Anima Relic.
Human-machine fusions[edit]
There are several cases where humans or human bodies are fused into Gears.
Lore[edit]
- Gears are controlled by the Zohar's master generator, which would imply they were intended to have some form of functionality with it.
- In the modern day, many Gears have been excavated from ruins by the Ethos. They were distributed across the Kislev and Aveh nations to aide each country in the war with one another. Close research and usage of the Gears by humans allowed for the creation of Kislev and Solaris-made Gears.
Gameplay[edit]
Every party (minus Chu-Chu as she can grow in size) can utilize a Gear in battle. They can either enter or exit them during battle. They require Fuel to use attacks, and even more for Deathblows up to Level 3. After defeating Achtzehn, the Gears can have the ability to use Level ∞ Deathblows. Additionally, the player can rename a Gear by talking to the green mechanics doing maintenance on them at the Yggdrasil.
Hyper Mode[edit]
After completing the Shevat dungeon, the party gains access to Hyper Mode which allows then to use ∞-level Deathblows for 3 turns (6 with Holy Pendant equipped on the pilot). In order to enter Hyper Mode, the Gear must reach attack level 3 and then stay there without decreasing the attack level. The chance the Gear will enter Hyper Mode is shown in the Gear status window. It increases as the Gear performs Deathblows and as the Gear's HP decreases, and is rerolled at the start of each turn.
Trivia[edit]
- Humans that were fused with Gears can be considered a precursor to the Face Mechon in Xenoblade Chronicles as they were humans or human bodies fused with a mech.
