The Galaxy Federation, also shortened to the Federation or abbreviated as GFG (Galaxy Federation Government), is the primary government body in the Xenosaga series that governs approximately 500,000 star systems throughout the known universe.
Branches and departments[edit]
Autonomous state[edit]
Every star system governed under the Federation has its own autonomous state government. As such, there are approximately 500,000 autonomous state governments overseen by them. Despite the naming convention, each autonomous state is not recognized as a sovereign nation. Federation law still governs over each and every one of them and their structure remains relatively consistent across the cosmos. Every autonomous state has an appointed Representative, doubling both as the executive head of their local government, and as a Member of Parliament to the greater Executive Committee.
Executive Committee[edit]
The Executive Committee is the central governing body of the Federation. It is comprised of the Autonomous State Representatives from every member system and led by 24 upper council members and the Executive Committee Director. A conference to decide the best course to take regarding broad matters across the Federation is held at the Federation Parliament building on Fifth Jerusalem. This conference is generally referred to as the Executive Committee Assembly.
Director[edit]
The Federation's Executive Committee Director is the highest executive position in the Federation's government. As such, the person in said position is required to be elected in by a majority vote from the entire Federation government. Wilhelm, the CEO of Vector Industries held this position several years before the events of Xenosaga Episode I.
Federation Council[edit]
The Federation Council is the primary legislative body of the Federation government. It has representative seats numbered in the tens of thousands. The Executive Committee Assembly is held by the legislature's most senior representatives.
Public Safety Commission[edit]
A subgroup of the Federation Parliament, the Public Safety Commission acts as an administrative organization overseeing the police forces of every planet in the Federation by way of democratic council votes. It additionally acts as a federal enforcement agency for investigating crimes that impact the entire Federation, conducting autonomous Galaxy Federation probes, training investigators, and all other matter of police work that requires unified execution Federation-wide. However, as a rule, it is unable to directly oversee or command Federation Police activities.
Federation Police[edit]
The Galaxy Federation Police is the primary law-enforcement agency operating on Federation-affiliated planets and regions of space. Their purpose is to cooperate with autonomous states and their precincts in maintaining law and order, and protecting the law abiding public from crime, accidents, disasters, drugs, etc. The Federation Police headquarters is divided into various departments:
- Section 1: The Administrative Director's Office
- Section 2: The General Safety Section
- Section 3: The First Security Section
- Section 4: The Traffic Control Section
- Section 5: The Second Security Section
- Section 6: The Information and Communications Section
- Various affiliated organizations and regional police forces.
The Special Ops Command, the department that Jan Sauer was employed at, belongs to Section 6. Among other departments, it is capable of overruling the jurisdiction of autonomous state precincts to conduct their own investigations.
Military[edit]
The Galaxy Federation Military is divided into at least 3 separate branches. These are the Federation Army, the Federation Space Force (a combination of the Navy and Marine divisions), and the Special Operations forces. The Army isn't typically deployed for space missions, but the Marines and Special Operations forces are seen quite prominently throughout Xenosaga engaging in battle against enemies such as the Gnosis, the Immigrant Fleet, and the U-TIC Organization. Luis Virgil is one notable member of the Marine corps (specifically the 117th Marine Division), and Jin Uzuki was once a member of the Special Operations forces. Both of which served under the command of Helmer (as Lieutenant General) 14 years prior to the events of Xenosaga Episode I.
The Federation military is regularly provided supplies, tools, and weapons by private businesses. Most notably, Vector Industries offers the sale and maintenance of Weapons Grade Realians, and Hyams Heavy Industries is the military's primary provider of A.G.W.S. units.
Other branches[edit]
Communication Promotion Committee[edit]
Often abbreviated as the C.P.C., the Communication Promotion Committee is a subgroup of the Federation Parliament dedicated to the administration and promotion of the U.M.N. and the general communications industry. It was originally founded as a department of the Public Safety Commission, but was split off under orders from Dmitri Yuriev in the T.C. 4600s. He eventually became the sole Representative of the organization and used it to fabricate the Descendants of Nestorius terrorist group and put pressure on his opposition within the Federation Parliament. Furthermore, he used the C.P.C.'s connections to the Federation Police's Information and Communications Section to influence the reorganization of the Police's 1875th Special Ops Command Force, replacing its Chief Sean McCallum with a loyalist by the name of Ernest Luis, and placing the majority of the Abraxas Detachment under arrest in the wake of their investigation on the U.M.N. terrorist Voyager.
Federation Special Inspection[edit]
More commonly abbreviated as the F.S.I., The Federation Special Inspection is an office within the Department of Energy's Advanced Technology Agency. The F.S.I. deals in the governing and regulation of the dangers of various advanced technologies. As such, their work often deals in matters with major enterprises involving large sums of money. Shion Uzuki's father, Suou Uzuki, was an agent of the F.S.I. before his untimely death. As an inspector for the U-TIC Organization on Miltia, he began to issue reports that served the interests of Ormus in exchange for medical treatment for his wife until the onset of the Miltian Conflict, where he colluded with his son Jin as a double agent for the Federation.
Subcommittee On Close Encounters[edit]
- Main article: Subcommittee on Close Encounters
Also referred to as the S.O.C.E. or the Contact Subcommittee, the Subcommittee on Close Encounters is a panel of researchers that was convened in response to the Gnosis phenomenon in T.C. 4754, just a year after the Miltian Conflict broke out. Its founding member, Representative Juli Mizrahi, is one of the 7 members of this panel that compose its operational core. They are joined by over 2000 additional members representing government agencies, businesses, and various scientific fields. The Contact Subcommittee is responsible for advancing and leading initiatives such as the Zohar Project, the recovery and analysis of the Y-Data, and the recovery of the Original Zohar.

It is formed of about 500,000 planetary nations. The presence of the U.M.N., which made possible huge reductions in physical and temporal constraints compared to earlier modes of transport and communication, was an enormous influence in the formation of such a large-scale, far-reaching federation.
The Executive Committee is its highest decision-making body.
