- This article is about the character in Xenoblade Chronicles X. For the accessory in Xenosaga Episode I, see Cross (XS1).
Cross (クロス), often called Rook by their teammates, is the unofficial name for Xenoblade Chronicles X's custom character. Their appearance and name are fully customizable by the player when the game starts, and they are always present on any player team.
Cross is recruited by Elma to join BLADE, and plays a large role in the exploration of Mira, diplomacy with various xenoform species, and the retrieval of the Lifehold.
Name[edit]
The character has no default or official name; the name entry field is blank and the player is forced to come up with something themselves. Using the name "Cross" is a community invention that originated with the first Japanese footage and trailers of the game, where the chosen name was "クロス" (literally the English word "Cross") and it was not clear at the time that this was a custom name not more official than any other. The choice of "Cross" in the footage is presumably based on the X in the game's title being pronounced "cross" rather than "eks".
In spoken dialogue, which cannot match the player's chosen name, the character is often referred to as "Rook" (short for "rookie").
In Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition, while "クロス" name is still used in the Japanese footage, the name "Ryan" is used in the English footage.
Story arc[edit]
Elma discovers Cross's lifepod in the Starfall Basin in Primordia as the sole survivor of a set of pods that were ejected from the White Whale. They prove themself in combat and are quickly brought into BLADE, the organization that explores Mira and keeps New Los Angeles safe from threats.
During the events of Chapter 5, Cross' arm is shot off by a Ganglion Skell when they block an attack directed at Tatsu, revealing mechanical components and blue blood. It is revealed to them that they-as well as everyone else brought aboard the White Whale-are a mimeosome, a mechanical lifeform in the shape of a human, controlled remotely through the Lifehold systems. They are taken to the Mimeosome Maintenance Center, where afer recovery they learn that their goal is to find the Lifehold Core which stores the human bodies.
Lore[edit]
As a playable character[edit]
- Main article: Cross/Gameplay
Cross is highly customizable as the default player character. They initially start the game as a Drifter, but can change once they reach class rank 10. Any skills learned from other classes stay learned, and the Battle Arts they can use are tied to the weapon types they have equipped. Once they've mastered a fourth tier class, they master that class's weapons and can use them regardless of class.
The player's appearance, gender, and voice are initially set by the player at the beginning of the game. Once the mission House of Cards is completed, the player can go the MS-MT lifepod at Yardley's Hideaway from 0:00 to 4:59 and change their appearance, gender, and voice. Only the name cannot be altered.
Character voices[edit]
Depending on the selected character customization options, Cross's voice can differ drastically, changing not only their lines in battle but those of other party members in response. Many of the voices are provided by voice actors known for other roles in the Xeno series.
Changing the in-game voice language (which is only possible in the Definitive Edition) will force the player to re-select a Cross voice. On the other hand, Avatars from other players will be assigned a voice corresponding to their choice in their own language, suggesting some correlation. For instance, players using the "Classic" voice will be switched to "Kansai-ben"

Miran Archives[edit]
Rescued by Elma at Starfall Basin, this human survived a dire crash landing after their Lifepod was jettisoned from the White Whale during its fateful descent. To their misfortune, they have suffered memory loss and are unable to recall anything but their name.
