Citan Uzuki (シタン・ウヅキ, Shitan Uzuki), also known as Hyuga Ricdeau (ヒュウガ・リクドウ, Hyuga Rikudo), is a playable character in Xenogears. He is a doctor that lives up in the mountains by Lahan Village. Citan knows a little more about the world than most do, and as such he is a mentor figure and friend of Fei.
Appearance and personality[edit]
Citan is a 29-year-old man with long, black hair wrapped in a ponytail. He wears glasses and a green coat. In battle, he may also be seen with his sword.
Citan is an intelligent and logical person who, while being inquisitive himself, oftentimes will avoid direct questions. Despite him not seeing his family much during the course of the game, he still seems to have a happy marriage with Yui Uzuki. He enjoys tinkering with junk at his home and is also very good with computers himself. He is very widely-talented, being able to work with various machines and people while still being one of the best martial artists and swordsmen in the world. He is well-read and keeps up with the goings-on in almost all nations. He also has an interest in art and music, having talked about both with Fei.
Story arc[edit]
History[edit]
Citan was born in Solaris, and his real name is Hyuga Ricdeau. He was born as a third class citizen and was the 9th child of Shouki and Luli Ricdeau. As a child, Hyuga learned martial arts from his grandfather Kikka. This included using a sword, with him specializing on the techniques white rostrum and black rostrum. When he was 12 years old, an epidemic hit the third class area in Solaris and his entire family died. Being the sole survivor of his family and due to his genius at a young age, some wondered if he actually caused the epidemic due to toxic experiments. This caused him to be driven out of the area.
With his reputation, Hyuga caught the attention of Ramsus, who desired to promote people based on ability rather than class. At the age of 15, Hyuga entered Jugend, with Ramsus as his sponsor. At this time he became a classmate of Sigurd and also became familiar with Jessie. Hyuga would visit Jessie often, who was married at the time and had a son, Billy. Hyuga was a candidate to become an Element, eventually attaining that rank, and would later attain the rank of Guardian Angel at 20 years old.
Hyuga's abilities with respect to weapons and Gear technology was significant. Gears and weapons that he developed included the Wyvern, the Aerod system used by the Vierge, the moveable frame of the Achtzehn, the Buntline, the Alkanshel and all 4 Gears used by the present day Elements.
2 years later, Hyuga would be responsible for the strategy of a Solaris invasion of Shevat. During the invasion he had a showdown with Gaspar, the 500 year old sage and martial arts expert. Hyuga also met Gaspar's granddaughter, Yui, and immediately fell in love with her. Hyuga was able to arrange secret visits to Yui, to whom he became married. He was personally trained in martial arts by Gaspar and, becoming conscious of his motives in battle chose to stop using his sword. His daughter Midori was born in Shevat 5 years before the events of the game. However Midori hardly spoke to her father and has a hard time opening her heart to him, being aware of his secret mission.
Emperor Cain desired to know whether Fei, as the Contact, had the power to qualify as Annonelbe, and whether the Time of Gospel, a time when humanity no longer needed a manager, had arrived. As such, he assigned Hyuga a special mission to spy on Fei and report to him on a periodic basis. Hyuga took on a false identity, changing his name to Citan Uzuki. He moved to the surface with his wife and daughter, and established a home just outside of Lahan Village where Fei was left to recuperate 3 years before the events of the game. On a periodic basis Citan reports back to the Emperor and will occasionally meet with his old classmate Ramsus.
Present day[edit]
In the present day, Citan continues to live just outside of Lahan Village in an area called the Mountain Path. He is known for his ability with machines and for being a doctor. He is able to repair things such as cameras, dig claws and even bathtubs. He has built up a good relationship with Fei and the villagers over the years. Fei often comes to visit him and eat his wife's cooking.
Fei initially meets with Citan at the start of the game in order to borrow a camera for Alice and Timothy's wedding. At this time Citan shows him a statue that has recently been excavated. When Kislev Gears attack Lahan Village, Citan warns Fei to not get into Weltall, but Fei does so anyway and ends up inadvertently destroying the entire village. In the aftermath Citan tells Fei to leave Lahan, but he secret arranges with his wife for her to bring the survivors to Shevat while he personally remains with Fei. Citan comes to help Fei and Elly in the Blackmoon Forest and while Fei sleeps recommends that Elly depart, knowing who she really is.
From here, Citan accompanies Fei to Dazil where they seek repairs for Weltall. While the two initially split up, they are reunited in the desert and confronted by Grahf. Shortly afterwards they are captured by Aveh and held on a prison ship. At this time Citan makes one of his reports to Cain. Due to the involvement of Bart and the Yggdrasil, the transport ship is destroyed. While Fei falls into a cave along with Bart, Citan is picked up by the remaining sky pirates, meeting Maison and being reunited with Sigurd, who still calls him by his real name.
Citan and Fei remain with the Sand Pirates, learning of their history and agreeing to help them. During a nighttime raid on the Pirates hideout by Gebler, Citan pilots the Gear Heimdal, and uses it as his personal Gear for the remainder of disc 1 of the game. He accompanies Fei and Bart to Bledavik and watches as Fei participates in the Battle Tournament. When Fei and Bart flee, Citan is able to assist by contacting Ramsus, resulting in a distraction.
Citan and Sigurd soon decide to admit their past to Fei and Bart about their time in Solaris and what they believe Solaris' plans to be. Citan however purposely leaves out much of the details, including his personal mission assigned by Cain. Citan visits Nisan along with Fei and Bart, and is particularly impressed by the Cathedral there. He joins Bart and Sigurd as they head to Bledavik and try unsuccessfully to retake control of Aveh. He then heads to the border with Kislev where Aveh and Kislev are fighting. When the Yggdrasil is destroyed by Id, Citan departs on an escape capsule and is separated from the Sand Pirates.
Citan heads to Nortune in order to continue his surveillance on Fei. He is able to arrange for himself to be installed as the doctor of D-Block. While here he assists and encourages Fei and personally fights with him and Rico in the sewers while they investigate the murder of some of Rico's subordinates. At this time Citan makes another secret report to Cain. Eventually Fei wins the Battle Tournament and Citan assists as he escapes from Nortune, heading to the Goliath Factory where they steal the Goliath and escape. Citan pilots the Goliath until it is shot down by Bart. At this time he is able to reunite with the Sand Pirates on the Yggdrasil II.
For a while, Citan takes more of a background role in the story during the Aquvy arc and as the party heads up Babel Tower and stays in Shevat. When the party launches attacks on the Gates maintained by Solaris on the surface, Citan assists with adjusting the mirror of Babel Tower to enable Billy to fire a shot from Fort Jasper that destroys one of the Gates.
Citan accompanies the others as they head to Solaris. Before heading to Solaris, Citan had met with Yui and decided to bring his sword with him, eventually pulling it out in battle and using it for the remainder of the game. He initially is part of a group with Fei and Elly, however he is separated from them. He eventually meets back up with Fei after he splits from Elly after taking on a false disguise as a Solaris soldier. The two head into the Soylent System but are quickly reunited with Elly. The three head through the System and Citan is able to provide explanations for what they are seeing, although he purposely lets Fei and Elly eat food that was derived from humans before revealing the truth to them. The three continue to make their way through Krelian's Laboratory, but the long length of their journey, Citan's ability to get them through a locked door and his significant amount of knowledge cause Elly to suspect his true motives. The lights go out and Citan has Fei and Elly captured.
Citan's true mission and name are revealed to Fei by the Gazel Ministry and Citan taunts Fei, manipulating him into changing into Id so he can directly converse with him. However Citan is revealed to be a true double agent, utilizing the technology in Krelian's lab to remove the remaining limiter from all of the party member's bodies. He then arranges for them to be freed and escapes from Solaris with everyone. Before departing Citan meets with Cain one last time, who entrust the decision over what to do with Fei to him. He also works with Jessie to destroy the last Gate in Solaris.
On Disc 2, Citan continues in his role as mentor for Fei, Elly, and the others. He reveals his personal Omnigear, Fenrir, which he uses in battle from this point onward. He briefly takes on the role of main narrator for the group during a part of the game when both Fei and Elly are absent. Citan's final appearance is in the game's ending animation where he, along with the other party members, wait for Fei's return with Elly in Xenogears.
