Carioca is a planet in the Xenosaga series. It is where Vector Industries' First R&D Division Type 1 OS Design Department, a lab integral to several characters' backstories, was located.

Story

In T.C. 4763, 4 years before the events of Xenosaga Episode I, Shion Uzuki began residence on the planet Carioca when she was assigned to Vector Industries' First R&D Division Type 1 OS Design Department. She and Kevin Winnicot, the Chief of the department, formed a romantic relationship during this time. A year later, Allen Ridgeley was assigned to the same department and began residence on Carioca. He became fast friends with Shion and Kevin.

On a stormy night in T.C. 4765, Andrew Cherenkov, with the help of the Red Testament, led a squad of U-TIC Organization soldiers in a raid on the Type 1 OS Design Department. This resulted in the sudden malfunction of the KOS-MOS Archetype, which was in active development at the time. The malfunctioning Archetype ended up killing most of the department and the U-TIC soldiers alike. Kevin was but one of the casualties in this accident. The only known survivors of the incident were Shion and Cherenkov, both of which were traumatized by the experience. Allen was away on a business trip at the time and only witnessed the aftermath; he had returned just in time to identify the bodies for investigators, and locate Shion after she had neutralized the Archetype.

Vector Industries' First and Third R&D Divisions have constructed several facilities here. It was in the research room of the Type 1 OS Design Department (the precursor to the KOS-MOS Project) that the archetype went out-of-control, leading to tragedy.
