Emperor Cain is a character in Xenogears and the emperor of Solaris. He, alongside the Gazel Ministry, were the first humans born on the planet where Xenogears takes place.
Appearance and Personality[edit]
Cain wears a golden helmet with a skull motif, gold chest plate, and maroon robes. His face is seen only when he is killed by Ramsus and his mask falls off.
Cain originally followed Miang and the Gazel Ministry's plan to resurrect Deus as the first human. However, due to he guilt he felt during the first years of humanity, he had a change of heart, wanting to protect mankind from the fate of Deus' awakening.
Story arc[edit]
Cain was the first human born on the planet, followed by the 12 members of the Gazel Ministry. As one of the founding members of humanity, along with the influence of Miang, he was treated by the subsequent humans born as if he was a god. Cain used this to manipulate the will of the people and it would eventually result in conflict with Abel, who desired for people to be able to live according to their own free will. Cain pursued and attempted to murder Abel, but this instead resulted in the death of the original Elhaym.
Cain was fated to live until the time of Deus' resurrection. As such he neither aged nor was able to be physically harmed by anyone other than himself. He remained in a powerful position over humanity and became the ultimate ruling authority over the nation of Solaris once it was formed. In part because of guilt over his acts against Abel and Elhaym and in order to help those humans who were fated to become parts for Deus, Cain offered up his body as a test subject to be used in experiments. This tampered with his immortality and he needed life extension treatments from Krelian in order to remain alive. Krelian and Miang had determined that Cain may eventually become a hindrance to the resurrection of Deus. As such, Krelian created a clone of Cain, Ramsus, who would have the ability to kill Cain if needed.
Questioning if Fei is "Anonnelbe", one who has the power to both save and destroy humanity, Cain entrusted one of Solaris' Guardian Angels, Hyuga Ricdeau (Citan) to monitor him. Citan reports to Cain throughout the game in telepathic fashion. Citan believes that Fei as the Contact will be able to rescue humanity and Cain eventually entrusts things to him. When the Gazel Ministry decides to move forward with the resurrection of Deus and activate the Gaetia Key, Cain stops them from proceeding. Miang and Krelian are able to manipulate Ramsus into believing that the existence of Cain is the thing that is holding him back and being able to use his full abilities. Ramsus confronts Cain, and at such time Krelian also reveals his betrayal to him. Ramsus then kills Cain, enabling the Ministry to go forward with using the Gaetia Key.
