Bond of Sea and Flame (20th Anniversary)

Bonds of Sea and Flame (called Bond of Sea and Flame on the Revival disc and Xenogears Vinyl - SHINKAKU -, sometimes unofficially referred to as Bonds of Sea and Fire) is Disc 1, Track 3 on the Xenogears Original Soundtrack, Track 3 on the Xenogears Original Soundtrack Revival Disc -the first and the last-, and Track 2 of the A-Side of the first disc of Xenogears Vinyl - SHINKAKU -. It is one of the tracks playable in the Nortune jukebox, under the option 'A Theme'.

The melody is used as a motif in After the Soldiers' Dreams (and by extension Dreams of the Brave - Deadly Dance) and Aveh, The Ancient Dance (and by extension BALTO and Bartholomew & Lahan). A variation of the opening accompaniment line is used at the start of The Wind Calls to Shevat in the Blue Sky and its remixes.

It plays as the music in the following instances:

  • Immediately after the opening cutscene with the Eldridge, when a brief exposition of the continent of Ignas is provided in text form.
  • Bart attempts to apologise to Fei, who tells him that he doesn't like to fight.
  • Bart speaks with his late father on the Yggdrasil about how he wants to join forces with Fei.
  • Margie thanks Fei for his role in rescuing her, and mentions how Bart protected her when they were captured by Shakhan.
  • The area theme in Nisan between when Bart learns about Sigurd, Citan, and Solaris and when he considers Sigurd's former life as an Element (including the latter cutscene).
  • Citan chats with Maison the night before Bart and his crew attempt to recapture Bledavik.
  • Bart reveals the Fatima treasure is in the Mausoleum in Nisan.
  • Bart and Margie use the Fatima Jasper to head deep into the Mausoleum. (The track continues as the area theme until the central area is reached.)
  • Bart discusses Sigurd's past with him and Maison the night after he reclaims Aveh.
  • Lacan reveals that Sophia agreed for him to paint her portrait (flashback).
  • Lacan expresses his doubts about completing Sophia's portrait to Roni and Krelian.
  • Margie says her final farewells to Bart before the party leaves to fight Deus.

Official translation

The title, "Bonds of Sea and Flame," not only embodies the theme of the youth (Bart) but also encapsulates "The Dreams of Those Who Came Before." While it's a straightforward arrangement, I've woven some subtly meaningful phrases into the music's details, making it quite enjoyable to listen to, don't you agree? The song perfectly captures Bart's amiable personality, and I'm confident that once players hear it, they'll find him even more likable. (Laughs)

Original text
