Artificial Blades are a type of Blade in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 which, as the name implies, were artificially created rather than naturally born from a Core Crystal. They were first conceptualized by the family of Soosoo, Tatazo, and Tora, the three of them desiring to have a Blade but lacking the aptitude to become a Driver.
Appearance[edit]
Artificial Blades are essentially robots, and thus can take a wide variety of forms. Basic models are clearly robotic, with exposed metal plating and rivets, while more advanced models are more able to mimic a human appearance.
Like a regular Blade, Articial Blades have a crystal in their chest, though in their case it is orange rather than blue.
Characteristics[edit]
Due to their nature as artificial beings, each artificial Blade model has its own characteristics. However, they still have a few things in common:
As they are independently constructed rather than awakened, Artificial Blades are not bound to a single Driver. Instead, they can be paired with anyone, Driver or not, and fight in much the same way. They do not even necessarily need a Driver to operate at full potential, unlike regular Blades which are dependent on the co-relationship to function.
Since Artificial Blades are powered by an internal ether furnace, they do not need to focus ambient ether to use their abilities. As a result, most anti-Blade powers and technologies do not hinder them. There is some implication during banter that they cannot quickly heal themselves as a Blade can, instead needing to be maintained.
Artificial Blades can be sentient, such as Poppi and Lila, piloted by someone, such as Rosa, or autonomous, like Torna's Blade Bots.
Poppi[edit]

Poppi is Tora's artificial Blade that he developed using the ether furnace given to him by his father. She is sentient and able to change between up to three forms, Poppi α, the form she is in upon creation, Poppi QT, a form she obtains near the end of Chapter 4, and Poppi QTπ, a form she obtains after completing the quest Powered-Up Poppi.
Lila[edit]

Lila is the original artificial Blade Soosoo and Tatazo were working on before the former's death and the latter's disappearance. Much like Poppi, she is sentient.
Rosa[edit]
Rosa is a giant artificial Blade piloted by Bana and Muimui during their battle with the party at Artificial Blade Adjustment. Like Lila, her design is based on a european maid's, with the cockpit where the two Nopon control her being based in the headdress. Said headdress can be detached and piloted individually, though the remainder of the body will be deactivated in the meantime.
She appears to be neither sentient nor automonous, as she is not shown to be able to function without someone else's input.
Giga Rosa[edit]
Giga Rosa is very similar to Rosa, though she has a golden 'G' on her head and is able to auto-destruct.
Blade Bots[edit]
Blade Bots are mass produced artificial Blades, using ether furnaces made by a captive Tatazo in the Old Factory on Bana's orders, and designed by Mikhail to be used by Torna.
Blade Bots are autonomous and do not appear to be sentient. However, if left without orders, they can enter some kind of berserk, as shown during Artificial Intelligence.

In Xenoblade Chronicles 3[edit]
Ino, a DLC Hero in Xenoblade Chronicles 3, identifies herself as an artificial Blade made by an "Oosoo". While she doesn't seem quite the same as those in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (e.g. the Core Crystal-like formation on her chest is yellow), she does show other characteristics of one, such as being able to form an affinity link with a chosen Driver.
