Allen Ridgeley (アレン・リッジリー) is an important supporting character in the Xenosaga series. He is Shion's co-worker at Vector Industries. He joins as a guest party member in Xenosaga Episode III.

Appearance and personality

Allen is a man with a light skin tone, light brown hair, and blue eyes. He is typically seen wearing his green Vector Industries uniform, and rarely anything else. When at the Kukai Foundation private beach, he is seen wearing a green and white striped, sleeveless leotard bathing suit.

A timid and wary person, Allen is always following Chief Shion Uzuki around with KOS-MOS. A genius who graduated top of his class at the University of Bormeo, he uses his mental prowess to keep Shion out of trouble and assist in the development of KOS-MOS. Allen is characterized as a very empathetic person. He believes that, because everyone fights their own personal struggles, no one's trials are truly worth undermining. He has fallen head over heels for Shion, to the point where he will do anything it takes to protect her, even if he has difficulty expressing his feelings. Allen goes as far as to write down his thoughts towards Shion in a journal along with information he catches that comes from her as a way to try and understand her.

Story arc

History

Life before Vector

Allen grew up in a large, relatively wealthy household with his unspecified number of older brothers, his parents, and his grandparents who founded his father's company. Allen's workaholic father rarely spent quality time with him and his brothers unless fishing was involved. His brothers, who were constantly competing to see who would succeed their father, doted on Allen knowing he wasn't interested. Allen likens this home-life to a prison despite acknowledging the good intentions of his family. This drove him to attend the University of Bormeo on a scholarship, aiming for a career at Vector Industries.

Working at Vector Industries

Allen joined Vector's First R&D Division in T.C. 4764 after graduating from the University of Bormeo. He was specifically stationed on Carioca, set to work in the Type 1 OS Design Department alongside Shion Uzuki and Chief Kevin Winnicot among others. While two years older than Shion, he is one year her junior at Vector. It is here that he developed feelings for her, even if he wasn't able to do much more than act as a third wheel in Shion's growing relationship with Kevin.

One year later, the KOS-MOS Archetype lost control at the research room on Carioca when it was raided by U-TIC Organization soldiers. Allen, however, was on a week-long business trip on the Dämmerung while the carnage ensued. When he returned, the forensics team at the scene of the incident had Allen identify the bodies of his coworkers; Hans, Chow, Vance, Jessie, and Chief Kevin Winnicot. Once Allen noticed that Shion's body was missing from the scene, he tracked her down and found her unconscious on the roof of the facility, alerting the authorities that he had found a survivor. Later on, Shion had been appointed as the new Chief of the KOS-MOS Project due to Kevin's death. Allen, most likely by process of elimination, was appointed as Shion's Deputy Chief.

Episode I

Allen is stationed onboard the Woglinde and assists Shion with KOS-MOS's development. He is concerned about how aggressive Shion can be at times and needs to pull her out of a simulation she uses to test KOS-MOS. Allen wants to ask Shion out on a date, a fact that is known to his coworkers, but is too nervous to do so. When the Gnosis attack the Woglinde, he, along with the other Vector employees, is rescued by KOS-MOS, who goes back for Shion with Allen in tow. Allen is able to flee on the escape pod with Shion and they are eventually found by the Elsa. Shion threatens to open the pod hatch if KOS-MOS doesn't cease her desire to leave them there to be picked up by someone else, much to Allen's dismay. After boarding the Elsa Allen befriends the crew members. He reports back into headquarters along with Shion and is further dismayed when he realizes no one noticed he was missing. Allen remains on the Elsa along with Shion and assists her throughout the remainder of the game.

Episode II

Allen has a rather awkward beginning to the game, accidentally destroying Shion's glasses, then claiming her actions puts him on edge right in front of her. He accompanies Shion and KOS-MOS to Vector's Second R&D Division on Second Miltia where they are shown the KOS-MOS Tertiary Weapon System. Afterwards Allen tells Shion she's acting strange today as she heads to the city. She tells Allen to keep an eye on KOS-MOS before she goes. Allen's timing in telling Shion it will be a few days for them to finish KOS-MOS' upgrades causes great annoyance to her. In the meantime, Helmer asks Allen and Shion for their help after the attempt to access the Y-Data from MOMO is unsuccessful and MOMO tries to destroy her mind in order to prevent Albedo from accessing it. He assists Shion and the others with diving into MOMO's subconscious domain.

After Albedo accesses the Y-Data and opens up the path to Old Miltia, Allen returns to the Dämmerung along with Shion. When Shion steals the Dinah to go to Old Miltia, Allen hesitantly accompanies her. Allen joins the Elsa along with Shion and KOS-MOS and stays on board when they head to Old Miltia and then to the Ω System. At the end of the game an exhausted Allen says he wants to take a long vacation, but Miyuki says he has a lot of reports to file first.

Upon graduation from the University of Bormeo, he joined Vector's First R&D Division. Although he is two years older than Shion, Allen is her junior by one year in the corporate hierarchy of Vector.

He apparently comes from a wealthy family, but he does not share details of his background with anyone.

Former Vice Chief of Vector Industries First R&D Division's KOS-MOS Project Joint Operation Systems Development.

Joined Vector's First R&D Division in T.C. 4764 after graduating from the University of Bormeo. While two years older than former Chief Shion Uzuki, he is one year her junior at Vector.

Acting as Vice-Chief for the duration of Shion's time at Vector, he continually supported Shion and garnered her trust and that of his subordinates with his diligent work ethic. The terms "simple" and "honest" describe this affable young man perfectly.

He was appointed R&D Chief after Shion's departure from Vector and was sent to the Galaxy Federation Consolidated Advanced Technology Testing Ground on Fifth Jerusalem.

He cares for Shion, but due to past events concerning Shion and her former love Kevin Winnicot and his own personal insecurities regarding Kevin, he does not often express his thoughts and emotions.

His family appears to be quite wealthy, but he prefers to avoid relying on them. His hobby is fishing.

He matures, albeit gradually, through the time he spends with Shion and the others, ultimately showing his manhood by excoriating Kevin for using Shion and KOS-MOS, and brushing away the last doubts in Shion's heart.

Although the distance between his and Shion's hearts has drawn noticeably closer since the incident on Michtam, his true worth as a man will be measured from hereon, in how he grows closer still.

The name given to Allen Ridgeley by the Professor. Generally, the Professor calls him this when making him help with work at the Robot Academy.

Every time he's called by this name, he gets dragged into some sort of trouble, so he doesn't think very fondly of it.
